Former governor backs away from McCain

GRAND RAPIDS -- He endorsed John McCain in the presidential primary, but now former Republican Gov. William Milliken is expressing doubts about his party's nominee.

"He is not the McCain I endorsed," said Milliken, reached at his Traverse City home Thursday. "He keeps saying, 'Who is Barack Obama?' I would ask the question, 'Who is John McCain?' because his campaign has become rather disappointing to me.

"I'm disappointed in the tenor and the personal attacks on the part of the McCain campaign, when he ought to be talking about the issues."

Milliken, a lifelong Republican, is among some past leaders from the party's moderate wing voicing reservations and, in some cases, opposition to McCain's candidacy.

During a stop in Grand Rapids on Thursday, Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican U.S. senator from Rhode Island, said he's voting for Obama and urging others to do likewise.

. . .

Chafee said he has spoken with several other moderate Republican leaders, and "there are a whole lot of us deserting."

One of them is Phil Arthurhultz, a former Republican state senator from Whitehall, who was traveling the state with Chafee to drum up support for Obama.

Bob Eleveld is a former Kent County Republican chairman who led McCain's West Michigan campaign in 2000. This year, he has remained mum unless asked.

"I'm not supporting either of them at this point," he said. "Suffice it to say there are a number of people who have been strong Republicans in the past, including party chairs, who feel as I do."

. . .

In the past, McCain was more of a moderate known for his straight talk, Eleveld said.

"I think the straight talk is gone," he said, describing himself as a member of the party's moderate wing. "I think he's pandering to the Christian right. That's some straight talk from me."

Obama's personal choices ARE an issue. Possibly even more so than our current economic situation. Don't kid yourself. McCain may not be ideal but Obama is a disaster waiting to happen. Unless of course you sit at home all day and wait for the food stamps and welfare check.

Obama/Biden is a far better choice than McSame/Caribou Barbie. The destruction wrought by the Republicans isn't going to be resolved by electing more of the same. Obama's disaster, should it occur, will be because of the same kind of daily bullshit Clinton was put through. If your kind keeps encouraging the destructive politics that have screwed up this country, we are well and totally screwed. Might as well start teaching your kids and grandkids to speak Chinese, because they're going to end up as the only superpower.

You really should read the Rolling Stone story on the truth about McCain.

He is a spoiled brat whose whole life has been all about selfishness and ambition. He has a volcanic temper and publicly goes off on people, including calling Cindy a cunt in front of reporters. There exists video of him going off on Phil Boyer, president of the AOPA, when McCain was trying to browbeat Boyer, and Boyer was having none of it. McCain was pretty much foaming at the mouth. This was a public senatorial hearing, and the man is such an asshole that he can't control his temper. McCain is NOT someone that you want as POTUS. He is unstable and has a terrible temper.

'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

The GOP gave us Bush and Cheney, who are right now presiding over the worst economic crisis in 79 years, and you write THAT rubbish and expect to be taken seriously!

Here's a fun thought: suppose McCain were to be president. Maybe guys like Kim jong-Il would think, "I not fuck with this guy. He crazy."

Great, I can see it "Vote for mccain, he will keep our enemies under control because he is unpredictable and looses his temper"

Thanks for the spelling correction;)

I wouldn't normally bother, but I was just surprised that someone choosing to make comments about intelligence and smartness, would make such an elementary error.B|

But umm the market wasn't at 14k in July it was October of last year.

I think you'll find I have been saying the same thing quite consistently.
