downwardspiral 0 #1 November 4, 2008 Study Finds Solid Link Between Video-Game, Real-World Violence As an avid gamer I always had the opinion video games negatively impact children psychologically. Not because they are video games but because they are violent and more and more disturbingly gory. So incredibly disturbing I can't imagine any parent letting their teen or younger play these games....but they do. Fortunately, the ESRB provides a rating system so parents can determine the nature of the game before purchasing. A 'Mature' rating means no one under 17. In my opinion they are fairly accurate and retailers will not sell it to your kid unless they are of age.www.FourWheelerHB.com
quade 4 #2 November 4, 2008 I'd have to read the actual study and not the reporter's interpretation of it. While it's pretty crazy to say they have no influence whatsoever, I really question the importance some people put on that relationship. I would wager a guess that a study could be made about how violent video games give a sense of control to the player he wouldn't otherwise have in the real world and thereby gives him an outlet for emotional outburst in a relatively harmless way just as well.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Butters 0 #3 November 4, 2008 Children are easily influenced. Activities (including video games) influence people. Thus, children are easily influenced by activities (including video games). Did they really need a study?"That looks dangerous." Leopold Stotch

Fortunately, the connection is borderline rubbish, just like the attempts to tie porn to sex crimes.

I don't think the connection is borderline rubbish. They are saying it makes kids more aggressive. Not that they'll go one a shooting spree or turn to crime. To everybody - Do you have kids? If so what games do you allow them to playwww.FourWheelerHB.com
BikerBabe 0 #6 November 4, 2008 I don't have kids. The only input i can add is my dealings with my best friend, who is the most avid of avid gamers. I mean, he has all consoles (from the original NES onward...), keeps an updated spreadsheet of all the games he's ever owned, and tracks how many of said games he's beaten. This guy is a fanatical gamer. He has a 6-year old son. His son loves games. His son is an amazingly intelligent kid who kicks our asses in Mario Kart, Wii anything, Zelda, etc. But my friend keeps tight control on what his son is allowed to play, or even SEE. When the kid's at school or in bed for the night, that's when he plays the FPS games and the more violent things. OK, so what i'm saying in waaaaaaay too many words is that this is another PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY issue, plain and simple. My friend knows that it's HIS JOB as a father to be responsible for what his son sees or doesn't see in regards to games. Don't really need a study to say that violence in games might make kids more aggressive. Who cares? What matters is what we do about it. Parents need to teach their kids what is right and wrong, real and fantasy, etc.Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! Belgian_Draft 0 #8 November 4, 2008 Violent video games I can accept. Violent children I cannot. The two do not mix well. The question begs to be asked, though,...are children made violent by the video games? Or do the games just attract violent children? Maybe a bit of both?HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. downwardspiral 0 #9 November 4, 2008 Quote PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY issue, plain and simple. Absolutely! And no way shape or form do I want the government to get involved. I like my violent video games. Although the current one I'm playing has disturbed me a few times with cinematic slow motion dismemberment. 90% of the kids I come across online when playing FPS's are beligerent, foul mouthed, and downright rude. I often wonder where there parents are and why the kid isn't in bed a 2 am on a Sunday. I have Mondays off. www.FourWheelerHB.com

Ion01 2 #14 November 4, 2008 Here is the real issue-Is it the videogame or the maker that is to blame or the parents? (Obviously a rhetorical question) Someone has to buy these games for thier kids and not explain right from wrong or the difference between fantasy and reality. BikerBabe 0 #18 November 4, 2008 well, now, DS, who said that *I* am not ALSO an avid gamer? and yes, i play both fallout 3 and wow (and eq2, and warhammer, and fable 2, and call of duty, and etc etc etc) I'm not ashamed of it...gaming isn't just for basement nerds anymore. Most of the death animation in WoW isn't exactly the most gruesome (in fact some is kind of comical), but I've played others as well.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

My urge is to skin them and eat them while they are still wiggling. Is that wrong? But seriously; I think if a video game pushes a person over the edge, they had some serious coping/functionality issues to begin with. A person with a mind so fragile, or tendencies so warped, that watching or playing anything sends them off the deep end should have been getting professional help all along." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
