diablopilot 2 #1 November 5, 2008 Presidential race aside, I never had much passion for deciding against the lesser of two evils, what about the other issues around the country that have asked for the people's voice to be heard? Is there enlightenment and equality for all to be seen on the future horizon, or is it going to be fear, resentment, and the Big Brother? Some of the issues: Looks like Gay Marriage is going to feel another set back, CA looks a little to close to call it yet, but Arizona(102) and Florida(2) sure seem to have taken a step back in recognizing all people as equals. And Arkansas(1) seems to think an even ratio of penis to vagina in a couple is what it takes to make a good parent. They must have a shortage of children in orphanages and foster homes or something. Speaking of vaginas, the owners of them, and their rights to do as they please with them and the bodies they're supported by......Colorado(48) seems to be confirming that a woman has the rights to her own body rather than the state, and South Dakota(11), while less enlightened, looks like they might just stay in the modern age. Nebraska(424) seems to think Affirmative Action has run it's course and can be put away, but in Colorado(46) it's tight race. Of course with the regression shown in the results on the Gay Marriage Initiatives there may be a new need for it. And while the hopefuls in Massachusetts(Q1) look like they'll have their hopes of repealing state income tax dashed, they can all move to Washington(1000) and start selecting their Dr. of choice in an effort to "take it all with them."---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
SarahC07 0 #2 November 8, 2008 http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/07/affirmative.action/ Ward Connerly, who heads the American Civil Rights Coalition -- a nonprofit organization working to end racial and gender preferences -- and the main backer of the ballot initiatives, says the 37 word initiative would read: "The state shall not discriminate against or grant preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education or public contracting." "It would forbid any state or local agency or special district from engaging in preferential treatment," Connerly said. Watch what Connerly says about the initiative » Connerly, who is of African-American and American Indian descent, said affirmative action causes resentment. He criticized cases in which a Caucasian student might be denied a college slot in favor of a black student with a lower grade-point average. "It's foolish not to think that the kid who is turned away is not going to ... resent that," Connerly said. Connerly, who grew up in Leesville, Louisiana, said he experienced oppression because of his skin color during his youth. I searched for a thread specifically dedicated to this and found nothing. Thoughts anyone?
TomAiello 26 #3 November 8, 2008 I actually got to talk with Ward Connerly many years ago (when he was on the Board of Regents for the University of California and I was a student rabble rouser). He's thoughtful and generally impressive. I'm pretty much in agreement with his thoughts on affirmative action programs.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

He's thoughtful and generally impressive. I'm pretty much in agreement with his thoughts on affirmative action programs. alot of programs put together to stop problems have gone to far and coused there own problems. unions, welfare, afermative action ect have all had good intentions but all have been abused to cause just as many problrems on the other end of the spectrum. Until programs can be used for good without being abused we will be teetering, therefore i don't think we are going forward or backward.
