DSE 5 #201 November 28, 2008 Quote So because a word may possibly offend someone somewhere and cause them to react it can no longer be said or written in any context or only when referring to anyone other than a white person? Does this mean that if a white man is talking to his son and says "boy" in earshot of African Americans and they take offense to it and kick his ass, they were justified? Do you really propose censoring any language based on its possibility to offend? Wouldn't you suppose common sense applies here? A person of any color speaking with their son or a young man using the term "boy" isn't going to be perceived as denigrating by anyone of marginal or better intelligence. A redneck with a known propensity for hating anything that isn't blue-eyed Jesus with a firearm using the term will likely always be perceived as a racialist (don'tcha just love that word?) with an intent to degrade or diminish. normiss 806 #202 November 29, 2008 Common sense SHOULD apply. Hell even urban dictionary understands the word used. As opposed to the majority of folks here.

No more, no less trouble than those that argue the term "boy" is acceptable in any/all situations. Kinda like the word "fuck." There are times it may be used, even appropriate. And times when a smart person knows to keep that particular epithet to themselves.

normiss 806 #214 November 29, 2008 The problem here is "boy" was not the term used. "Your boy" was. Those two terms are worlds apart.

BIGUN 1,326 #223 November 30, 2008 I'm really astounded at the direction this thread has taken. What started out as an after-election ripple regarding a subsequent suit about President-Elect Obama's citizenry, which I later found "someone's" explanation that the resurrection of the suit would probably not see SCOTUS and for me; that was the end of that and moved on. Let me place this publicly; while I may have not liked our choices (Obama being the first step into the White House and Palin being the second step), However, America made a choice. One of the few nations that gets to exercise that privilege. A lot of us have been under both Republican and Democratic presidents since JFK. Each one having their strengths and weaknesses. Once America chose; that was it. We don't have to respect the man/woman; but we have to respect the office held (as most any soldier will tell you; you learn that you don't have to respect the person; but you do have to respect their rank). For me; I'm willing to support him and the office he holds and at least give him a chance. He's stepping into quite a quagmire of poo right now, I wish him and us; nothing but success. If a Mod wants to throw this thread in the recycle bin... feel free.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
