Obama's Christian Faith

Recommended Posts

Before the election:
Obama sets record straight on his religion

"I've been to the same church _ the same Christian church _ for almost 20 years," Obama said, stressing the word Christian and drawing cheers from the faithful in reply. "I was sworn in with my hand on the family Bible. Whenever I'm in the United States Senate, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America...

...campaign representatives blanketed South Carolina churches Sunday with literature that touted Obama's Christian faith. One piece features photos of Obama praying with the words "COMMITTED CHRISTIAN" in large letters across the middle. It says Obama will be a president "guided by his Christian faith" and includes a quote from him saying, "I believe in the power of prayer."

A second piece includes photos of Obama with his family and a caption that says they are active members of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. It explains how as a young man Obama "felt a beckoning of the spirit and accepted Jesus Christ into his life..."

After the election:
Obama skips church, heads to gym

President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.

On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym...

We're getting change all right - he's changing before our very eyes, from the image he portrayed to get your vote during the election, to what he really is - a die-hard extremist liberal.

Duhhh.....
Ever been in Washington on a Sunday? The whole city comes to a stop because of the cowardice of Bush. Clinton did the city a favor by enjoying services in his home much of the time.
Obama has been able to attend church for years without having a procession before and after him. Now he has zero choice. I'm sure it's a PITA to mount a bunch of Secret Service guys, and he probably would like to spare himself the agony for now.
And if not? Who really cares? God will understand.

Poor guy, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, isn't he?
Maybe, just maybe if he were white, Republican, and had a name like "Steve" he'd be less of a target for the red(neck) states.

maybe he prays while he pumps iron. I know a little sweat makes me feel humbled.

Oh no! He hasn't been to church for like a month! The extremism! The activism! The Un-Americanism!

Why, even the Simpsons make sure to go to church!

(I really don't get this one. Aren't you an unbeliever yourself, John?)
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

I've been known to spend Sundays at the dropzone, though more often than not I go to church, at least these days.

I personally don't give a fuck about political candidates' religious beliefs. But when the right wing media makes such a stink about it, I can excuse any line of bullshit any candidate will throw out about their religion.

Religion is nobody's business but their own.

Apparently you're wrong. It was a major factor in the media, a major factor in the last election, and continues to be a major factor in the minds of a lot of people. [:/]

What? Because he doesn't have time for church there is something wrong? Is that really your rallying point for this?

Protip: You keep your faith even if you don't visit an arbitrary brick building once a week. It's more on how you live your life and treat others.

Sounds more to me you are just an extremist looking for anything to pound home. This is by far the dumbest and weakest thing you have tried to hang your hat on so far. But keep going, I'm enjoying the comedy of it. If the guy is just skipping church is the biggest issue of the day, let's just say that over half of the country won't care.

John:

you are not an idiot. And men of your conviction will not follow the way of the dinosaurs.

That's all.

i'm just crossing my fingers that all of this religious obsession, the incredible amount of time and money that is spent on articles like this, is simply a sign that christianity is losing its hold on the country. certain groups have been in heaven (pardon the pun) for the last 8 years with someone like bush running the show, and now that's over. that's got to be kind of scary.

seems to me that obama is a pretty realistic representation of the average christian american. the only "extremism" in your post is right here: "We're getting change all right - he's changing before our very eyes, from the image he portrayed to get your vote during the election, to what he really is - a die-hard extremist liberal."

, maybe now we can get back to business and leave god out of it.
Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!

Hand on the Bible or the ? when he's sworn in.

Ciao MoFo's,

Again, for 20 years he went to same church and heard the same book retread over and over. You honestly think in a few weeks from not going to a building that particular book means any less to him. Really, this line of thinking is hilarious. This is the problem with most people of faith. They put their all their beliefs into a building and a man wearing a gown. It's far more than that.

We will soon hear the groans of disappointment the right wing will experience when he swears in like every other president has. "But . . but . . . I was SO SURE he was an evil black terrorist Muslim! What do I scaremonger with now? I know - he'll take away everyone's guns. Yeah, that's the ticket."

Soon? Have you not been paying attention? That scare mongering took place well before November 4th and since then gun sales have skyrocketed.

actually I had my 'epiphany' when I was 14 years old, sitting in church and realizing what a load of bunk it all was. I continued church, bible study classes, etc until I was 18 or so, mostly because that was the family thing to do.

Can you all imagine me, reading the lessons from the bible? I did it all the time, since I was a good speaker, Rev Reid always asked me to do that almost every week in church.

wow, scares me now. glad I woke up when I did.
