tumbler 0 #7 November 30, 2008 I recall a report regarding the effects of the 3 day power outage the Northeastern US had several years ago... not exactly what it said but the idea was with the power plants down for those three days the pollution level in the corridor dropped by 80%, or some such number as to make me remember how remarkable it was. I bet the Earth would recover very quickly if we were to leave. And remember... when the aliens come they are going to eat the fat people first!! shropshire 0 #10 November 30, 2008 Just because there are no people doesn't mean that there would be nothing here - the rest of life would get on with living and well, without our help/hindrance. It was O.K before we arrived and would do perfectly well without us. It's us that are fucking up the planet - no one else. It all points directly back to us and in a relatively short period of time. Belgian_Draft 0 #15 November 30, 2008 Better or worse is subjective. At various periods during earth's history, the environment has been conducive to different forms of life. Perfect conditions for one form of life can wipe out another. We are partially responsible for the rapid rate of global warming which is endangering some species, but at the same time other species are thriving like never before because of the warming.HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. TomAiello 26 #19 November 30, 2008 That makes about as much sense as "your body would be better off without red blood cells" or similar. Humans are part of the ecosystem that we sometimes anthropomorphize as "Mother Earth". Sometimes (often) we do things that mess up other parts, but that doesn't mean we're not an integral part of the whole.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

shropshire 0 #22 November 30, 2008 I can't agree to that analogy... it would be the hight of presumption to suggest that mankind is as important to the Earth as blood cells are to our body. I'd suggest that we're no more or less important than any other life form on the planet. - Nothing special about us (apart from our destructive power). (.)Y(.) SpeedRacer 1 #25 November 30, 2008 Not really. The biggest and most devastating incident of pollution happened when bacteria started farting out free oxygen. Free oxygen (O2) is extremely corrosive. It will even corrode iron. Oxygen built up in the atmosphere to a point where most species at the time were wiped out. The species that arose after that had to have special enzymes to deal with the high levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. Of course, this opened the way for eukaryotes to eventually develop. Would the Earth have been better off without those oxygen-producing bacteria? Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
