But what about letting your kid do what he/she thinks is...yanno...fun? Heaven forbid we let kids be kids. This strikes me as an extension of parents living vicariously through their children.Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! kbordson 8 #4 December 1, 2008 From a genetics standpoint - I'm thinking "cool." But how do they know which chromosomes code for kicking or pitching and which genes are for motivation and drive? From a parental standpoint - no way in hell would I have any child of mine tested.

Darius11 12 #6 December 2, 2008 QuoteThat is what is wrong with parents today! God fobid kids just have fun and do what they want. I actually think the opposite. I think what’s wrong is parents just let their kids have fun and think having fun is equal to parenting. WHat happens to teaching discipline, sacrifice and reality. I think any young athlete usually has some parent pushing them Tiger woods just pops to mind. Was there days he wanted to not wake up and go play golf? I am sure. Did his dad sometimes force him to play longer dig deeper I am sure? I think it worked out well for him, and Michael Phelps. Kids do not understand the consequences as well as adults do. Most kids would not go to school if you let them. As for genetic testing. I think if it is proven to be accurate it will be a valuable tool. I would love to know if my infant child has musical abilities, or math, or maybe he/she can run. As a parent knowing what your child MIGHT like is a good tool. Now as for forcing the child to do something he does not want depends on the degree and the reason. We force kids to do things they don’t want often, if you are doing it for your child’s better future is it wrong? I don't think so.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Beachbum 0 #8 December 2, 2008 Quote As a parent knowing what your child MIGHT like is a good tool. Any child MIGHT like anything. The testing doesn't indicate a propensity to like or dislike, only the physical genetic makeup that the child could possibly be one who might be "naturally" good at something. I'd hate to see any child pushed into something they have no interest in, or discouraged from an activity they do show interest in based on testing. Just because their genetics don't meet the "standard" to indicate they can be good at something doesn't necessarily mean they can't be. I'm sure that the genetic possibility is only that, not a guarantee that the child WILL be good at whatever it is. Not to mention the fact that the science is still developing, and could be inaccurate or incomplete! As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks? WHat happens to teaching discipline, sacrifice and reality. When i said "let kids do what they want" i was talking about extra activities. Not all the time. My kids chose there own sports etc. but they dont get to do them if they dont do as they are suposed to!
