Gawain 0 #1 December 8, 2008 First - BlackBerry. It's likely that Mr. Obama will have to give up his BlackBerry. However, I read that he may be looking into ways to keep it. Issues being the official records his correspondence comprises. My position: I hope he keeps one. Having the connection to the "outside" is nice, but to feed the BlackBerry addiction is critical (I say this as a CrackBerry addict myself, having an 8800 for work, and a 9530 Storm for myself). Second - Cigarettes. As a former smoker myself, I can appreciate the challenges he faces (he's "quit" but not really "quit"). Now, the White House became a "smoke free" zone during President Clinton's term. The prerogative is certainly his though don't you think? My position: If he truly wants to, there is no reason why he should pick up a cigarette again. Would I blame him if he had a puff or two? Hell no. I'm not some "born-again-ex-smoker". In summary, give him his BlackBerry, upgrade him from his 8700-series to a 95xx series Storm . And keep a pack Marlboro's and a book of matches in the secretary's desk... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! It's not "our" job to tell him whether he can take legal drugs such as alcohol or tobacco in what is now HIS home.... As long as he pays for his smokes same as we do. Mike. Belgian_Draft 0 #3 December 8, 2008 I'm sure a place or two can be found in the private quarters of the White House for Obama to light up a smoke now and then. However, the "business" areas should remain smoke free just like most of the rest of the country. It's really no big deal. Unless, of course, he shakes his finger at the camera and says," I did not smoke that cigarette, that Marlboro. Ok, so I took one drag...but I didn't inhale!"HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. quade 4 #4 December 8, 2008 QuoteAbsolutely. It's not "our" job to tell him whether he can take legal drugs such as alcohol or tobacco in what is now HIS home.... It's not HIS or any other President's home. A part of it is where they reside during their term in office, but it belongs to the American people as a whole and the vast majority of it is office and public space.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

rehmwa 2 #6 December 8, 2008 Quote what is now HIS home.... it's not his home, it belongs to the taxpayers - frankly, I'd prefer he not stink up my house with such a gross smell ...unless you want to consider this government subsidized housing, or something under squatter's rights but then, if you advocate 'free' government housing for people that make several hundred thousand a year, then we won't have any common ground to discuss it on the other hand, if he can't quit, then we can bash his hypocracy about being 'pro-environment' every time he tries to play the 'green' card (not to be confused with a Green Card - which I believe is discussed in another thread) ... Perhaps it's better to liken it to a hotel suite, or military base housing; something which comes with the job. While Y'All can say where he lives, can you say exactly how he lives there? Incidentally, in Scotland (which has at present some of the most draconian no-smoking legislation) you CAN smoke in hotel bedrooms legally. Mike.
