Andy9o8 2 #26 January 12, 2009 Quote How did you people ever get along before the development of the affordable cell phone? Same way people got along before the development of the affordable car. Or the affordable desktop computer. Which is: just fine. But once the technology is integrated into your daily lifestyle, yesterday's luxury becomes today's necessity. I had the same argument about cell phones with my mom, who's in her 70's. I reminded her that 40+ years ago, she used to roll her eyes when her parents could not, for the life of them, understand how any family could need more than 1 car and 1 phone. wmw999 2,447 #27 January 12, 2009 Quote I remember speeding a lot to music in my youth. Music certainly has effect I noticed that about rock music while in my 20's. It made me more aggressive and pissed off in the car too. Trust me, I don't need that . Don't listen to it in the car much anymore. The biggest difference between a cell phone and a passenger is that a passenger can usually tell when the driving is about to get tense, and they'll stop talking, which stops the distracting. A cell phone person can't, which means that the driver generally tries to maintain a non-driving conversation style while on the phone. You're on the phone to converse, not to just hang with the person or get somewhere. Kids can't tell when things are getting tense, but you can ignore your kids, and you can tell them to be quiet (well, you can tell them). There will always be subpar drivers. They're probably most effected by cell phone use, but they're also nearly incompetent if there's a wreck on the side of the road. kelpdiver 2 #33 January 12, 2009 QuoteNumerous tests, and mythbusters, have shown that talking on a cell phone is worse than drunk driving. so why aren't there 10s of thousands of fatalities because of cell phones? Far more people spend far more time using the phone then driving drunk, and yet the results clearly show your claim to be false.
kelpdiver 2 #34 January 12, 2009 BTW, I watched the mythbuster episode. From a science standpoint, it was one of their weaker trials. Not well constructed, and producing results that are slightly better than anecdotal. Social science is hard to model, and harder in 20 minutes of TV time.
