But moving map display GPS units are OK.
I am all for banning hand sets. It truly amazes me how often I navigate around a driver who is clearly not paying attention and notice that they are on the phone. I realize the research shows that the accident rate goes up with hands free sets, but it also goes up if you are having a conversation with someone present in the car. 90%+ of my driving is with me alone in the car. I am constantly amazed at how much poorer a driver I am when there is someone else in the car.

I find it hard to believe that any honest person can say their driving doesn't deteriorate, in some form, while talking on a cell phone - or dealing with any distraction in the vehicle really.

I know mine does.

We should take the radios/cd/mp3 players out of the cars too.

Maybe my driving may be affected when I use a hands free set but not to the point where I crash into shit.

Its like talking to someone who is in the passenger seat. Except when someone is sitting in my passenger seat I occasionally look at them I don't do that while using a hands fre device.

It's nothing like that. Having a passenger, while it can be distracting, is also another set of eyes. I've had my wife, and others over time, help me prevent an accident because they noticed something I didn't mid-conversation. I've done the same to them, while they were driving.

Sorry, but it's not even CLOSE to the same thing.

Expecting people to be responsible with cell phones while driving, is like expecting people to be responsible with canopy flight in the same airspace.

Both work well in theory, neither work in the real world when plain old ego's come into play.

I think it depends a lot on the subject matter and interactive nature of the phone call. Simply listening to a piece of information isn't really the issue. For instance, listening to music seems to have almost no effect whatsoever, but formulating a response, that seems to be the real issue.

I recently read a lengthy article on some research that has been done.
Some points that stuck out:

- Cell phone usage distracts a driver *much* more than listening to radio/music-player.

- Cellphone usage distracts a driver *much* more than other people talking in the car.

- They believe that the cellphone is much more distracting because the user is under pressure to immediately respond to the other party and is thinking about that response instead of thinking about driving. Radio/music-player/passengers can be tuned out as background noise.


I do a lot of cycling, and I get damned tired of drivers pulling out right in front of me WHILE LOOKING DIRECTLY AT ME, with a vacant, glassy-eyed stare and a cellphone pressed to their head.

I'm all for a cellphone ban on use while driving.

I agree 100% people need to get off the damn phone when driving. Mythbusters also proved it lowers ur driving ability.

I was driving my motorcycle when the woman in the lane next to me decided to take my lane without looking......she was talking on a cell phone.....my horn didnt get her attention but my foot in her door sure did when she nearly pushed me into on coming traffic.

It's ENTERTAINMENT! There scientific method is use more explosive.

Numerous tests, and mythbusters, have shown that talking on a cell phone is worse than drunk driving.
Also, if it was only an issue of taking care of ones self then the government should stay out of it, however, this is not the case. Just like drunk driving is against the law because it effects and kills other so to with cell phone usage while driving. If people only killed themselves while driving and doing these things thats fine but that is not the case. If you make a poor decision on the road it almost always effects other people who were making good decisions and that is what is wrong.

PS. Driving is a privilege...not a right.

Yeah, well, sometimes perception really is reality. It's because we gain much of our knowledge by living the anecdotes of our personal experience. Damn near everyone has had the experience of some twat on a cell phone cutting them off without a turn signal, or trundling along in the left lane, oblivious to traffic. Once that happens a bunch of times, you start to realize the correlation.

It's like when I taught my older kid to drive, I taught her to be extra-cautious around pickup trucks in traffic, because their drivers are more likely than average to drive like assholes. After she'd had her license for about a year, she told me, "Gee, Dad, that really is true!" *

text messaging on a pager is even worse. I do my best to avoid it, but once in a while when traffic is light and I really need to, I'll do short quick messages, otherwise I pull over.

I have noticed that too. Hell, I've had more run-ins with stupid rednecks driving pickups than anything else, but I have also noticed more than a few sporty cars driven by assholes. Then there's the occasional crotch rocket rider that pulls up next to me, does a wheelie, and zooms off in the distance, then there's the asshole 18 wheeler that rides your bumper so close you can't see nothing but the grille, when I'm stuck in a long line of vehicles.

There's one in every crowd, but I'll agree with your statement about the pick ups, especially around here in central Alabama.

I have a waffle maker and a small hot plate - cooking eggs and bacon and waffles, WHILE talking on the phone, drinking a soda and pitching pails of used cig butts on those driving smokers' windshields - while on the computer and reading posts from here and working an air traffic control station.

All this while speeding backwards with the windows covered in ice and snow.
