Will the US Regain Respect in World Opinion Again

Recommended Posts

Ok the inauguration is over.

President Obama is following thru on his promises to close GITMO and to make diplomacy a priority rather than follow the "Bush Doctrine"

Some of our Bush supporting posters seem to believe that our image abroad is just a figment of the media's collective left wing mind. Most of those outside our country have lost most of the respect they once had for America.

We had so much political capitol and the willingness of the world after 9/11 to do what was needed to stop terrorism and George Bush squandered it. I think that is starting to change and will continue to improve.

I think the image of the USA is already climbing in world opinion.

So what say you.. the loyal posters of Speakers Corner.

Yes or no.

Where's the option, "I'm a US citizen, and world opinion doesn't concern me because the world does not have my country's best interests at heart" ??
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Well, neither do your neighbors. Still best to be on good terms with them.

Absolutely..so long as they make the same effort to be on good terms with us. Don't see much of that lately.

Well, by that standard, no one would be on good terms with anyone, because no one would go first.

I think it's a good idea to be on good terms with your neighbors even if they don't put the same effort into it. It costs little and returns you a lot.

I think this is a foolish poll.

Those who had "lost respect" for the US have little bearing on my daily life. and if just changing the President gets the rest of the world all hot and sticky?!

I seriously don't have too much caring who the PM of the UK is nor did I truly care if Saddam was in charge of Iraq.... I do like to have the ability to visit other countries and do medical missions.... but if some country doesn't WANT me to bring my supplies and knowledge to help then cuz they have politics issues, thats is their problem. Getting down to basics. Life and death is a bit more important than politics -

Those that know ME. I respect their opinions. Some random half a world away.... why do I have to worry about "regaining respect."

I guess a better question/poll might be Will US POLITICIANS Regain Respect in World Opinion? And to that I would ask - will they regain respect here at home first?

I didn't vote because I don't think it is a binomial distribution. I have lost a lot of respect for the US, it's leaders, and it's population over the last seven or eight years, but I have never lost absolute respect.
I gained respect for the Leaders of the US greatly last Tuesday, but it's not like I'm lining up for Kool-aid. My respect for the American population has actually been on the rise for a couple of years as the people seemed to be waking up, questioning why the constitution has been ignored, standing up and saying it is not acceptable that torture is being done in their name. This is a far cry from 2003, 2004, 2005 when the legislators, the press, the intellectuals, everyone was towing the line (I know it wasn't everyone, Bill Maher was standing tall).
I, like many around the world, are hoping and expecting that the new administration will continue this trend, but we are under no illusion, USA is still the imperial force on this planet, and they will continue to push the rest of us around. It is all a question of scale.

Umm...I think that's why we have bigger guns than they do ;)

im not a us citizen and i voted yes. in fact worldwide respect ahs already been increased it is hoever going to hard when you have a failry significant portion of your population who think like that above. luckily for america most of the rest of the world can see that one statement / person / post does not a countrywide opinion make

Oh, you'd be in plenty of company. But that would be the equivalent of advocating the xenophobia and isolationism that has been popular in the US since the early 20th Century, but which history has shown to be more of a losing strategy than a winning one.

haha i get the best of both worlds. i get to enjoy all the benefits of america, american girls who love irish boys is an example a weak dollar is another :p, great skydiving and skydivers and great scenery whenever i want without actually ever being associated with the bad press america gets(sometimes fairly sometimes not) or ever being accused of being a gun toting hilbilly

so i have a pretty charmed life

one major thing america has in its favour is it does not have a living breathing reminder of most of the things that are wrong with america on the tv screens and newspapers around the world everyday. i happen to agree to a large extent with bushes decisions on iraq and afghanistan and i agree with a nation actively defending itself but other than that the guy was a fucking retard and a disaster for your country

So tell me.

We are chastised for interfering with other countries business and politics. We become the evil empire when we send people, weapons and money. You want us to stop... but don't be isolationist.... keep sending the money. Right?

Bottom line. I think we need to fix things here at home first.

IF we have extra left over after paying our debts, then WE decide who gets to have our charity. But that is a big IF we have any left over.

Is that being an isolationist? OK.

Once again, people need to review the difference between isolationism and non-interventionism.

The difference is in how people justify whatever action they deem appropriate. Non-interventionism would also mean not begging a government to allow us to send aid to national desaster areas. It would also mean not stepping into Darfur or pouring money and aid into Africa countries.

So on the report card of the school of life.... is it a good thing that the checkbox for "Plays well with others" is marked with a failing grade?

I prefer well adjusted children.. and countries, particularly my own.

In my experience the class bully does not succeed in life.
