I just don't think the implication that everyone who is on welfare is blowing their money on rims and craps is very accurate. When I was a kid, my family used food stamps for a short time. My father was working his way though law school. We had shitty old cars and a single black and white TV. I bet that a lot of people these days, in fact the vast majority, who are using government assistance actually need it and use it fairly wisely. They also, like we did, use it in emergencies and get off it as fast as possible.
I do, however, agree that the system can and is being abused by some people. I just think that the scale of it is not as widespread as you imply.

QuoteOK, so that is one example of someone with some pretty fucked up priorities.

and at what percent do you consider it to be a problem? I am just one business and have seen alot of this over the last 6 years. this countries liberal agenda is breading this kind of behavior and it will get worse with the liberals in the white house. nothing that has been done over the last 12 months has encouraged responsibility. everything has been spend and the government will bail you out. What message does that send to the people of america?

It's been a lot longer than 12 months since long-term responsible financial behavior was encouraged by anyone. Including the last several administrations.Quotenothing that has been done over the last 12 months has encouraged responsibility
Any time a rebate check is sent out to people for them to spend. Any time people are encouraged to use credit for regular expenses (all those credit card ads). None of that is responsible.
The growth of advertising, and its ready access through the greater and greater permeation of everything by the paid media has a lot to do with why people spend so much money on crap.
Ronald Reagan probably started this round, with the live big and rich-is-good approach that he had. But it's not the first time -- just look at the first part of the 20th century, when there were definitely multiple classes of people, and it was admirable to live beyond your means.
It's not admirable to live beyond your means. That's true whether you're buying a new car, a new school, or a new battleship. The fact that we see so many people doing it on TV just makes it more likely for us to want what the Jones's have.

Yep. Of course, our economy _depends_ on people spending so much money on crap, so "economic recovery" and "spending much less money on crap" aren't really achievable together.

It's a problem if even one person does it. It is not, however, realistic to blame all of our country's problems on that one person. Welfare abuse is wrong no matter how widespread it is, but fixing the welare system will not solve our current financial crisis. In fact, that guy spending money on his car and at the casino does more to stimulate the economy that if he put it in a savings account. The fact that he got the money from the government is not ideal, but at least that cash is circulating.

Can someone explain this one to me? I don't understand this argument. I was in for several years, getting paid to do a job that, IMHO, is one of the few legitimate expenditures of government. Are you saying that having a military is a socialistic policy?
