And billvon says its the deniers who are being political. billvon 3,076 #27 February 16, 2009 PBMR - pebble bed modular reactor. One of the inherently safe designs. One is currently running in China. The idea is that pebbles (fuel elements with impermeable claddings) are added to the reactor as needed; used ones are taken out the bottom. If there is a loss of coolant accident, then the core heats up until natural convection takes over to cool it. You do not need any active cooling or control rods to keep the reactor from melting down, so you don't rely on pumps, heat exchangers, backup heat exchangers, water injection etc to be able to safely shut the plant down. It just goes to an 'idle temperature' and sits there until you restart it. HTGR - high temperature gas reactor.* The PBMR is actually one of these, and these systems use helium (or some other gas) instead of water as a coolant. One of the big pluses for these sorts of reactors is that they reach very high temperatures, sufficient to separate hydrogen and oxygen in water. This means you can have a component of the reactor that generates hydrogen from water, and hydrogen is a good fuel both for making other fuels (like methane) and for making electricity (in fuel cells.) This, in my opinion, is the only way that hydrogen will ever be a practical fuel. (otherwise known as "VHTR" or very high temperature reactor.)
