Capt.Slog 0 #3 February 18, 2009 Quote Barack certainly has a taste for folks who don't bother to pay their taxes. According to the IRS, 21% of people in the $500k - $1M income range underpay their taxes. So maybe he should simply stop nominating high income people. True, but not all of them voluntarily place themselves in the path of public scrutiny by becoming a United States Congressman. Emanuel is well-educated and runs with a crowd that is highly sophisticated about these things. He should have known better. This was really stupid. Maybe not goat-fuck stupid, but it was stupid. And he's not exactly a shrinking-violet personality who engenders sympathy for himself. Dumbass.
riddler 0 #9 February 18, 2009 Man, o man. Those Republicans sure have a problem paying their taxes. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/ QuoteAlaska officials have told Gov. Sarah Palin she must pay back taxes on the thousands of dollars she received in state per diem funds while living at her home in Wasilla. The Washington Post first reported last September that Palin had billed the state for nearly $17,000 worth of meals and other living expenses while staying in her own home during the first 19 months of her administration, even though the official governor’s residence is in Juneau. The news clouded Palin’s self-styled image as a small government reformer, just weeks after she was tapped as John McCain’s running mate. At the time, Palin’s office said the governor was entitled to the payments. ... Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

At the time, Palin’s office said the governor was entitled to the payments. ... I gotta take up for Sarah. Mainly because she's hot, but also because the situations aren't even close. She claimed per diem from the state, and they deemed it appropriate and paid it. They issued her a W-2, and it didn't include the per diem. Also appropriate. Now they've backtracked, and decided to reissue the W-2 and call the per diem payments income. So she owes the taxes. The Obama Turbo Tax cabinet/staff is Chicago politics at its best. I agree with Chuck. At some point, even the die hard worshippers are gonna start having doubts. The forecast is mostly sunny with occasional beer. She got paid per diem for living in HER OWN HOUSE - and is now annoyed that she has to pay taxes on the money! It's equivalent to a politician complaining they shouldn't have to pay taxes on money they stole from the government. Let's compare that to the latest conservative whine - Hilda Solis's tax issues. When you delve into them you discover that they're not her tax problems at all, but her husband's. And for this she gets labeled "toxic" and a "tax cheat" by republicans. I agree, the situations aren't even close.

Because according to the original article, the investigation was at her own request. "At the Governor's request, we reviewed the situation to determine whether we were in full compliance with the pertinent Internal Revenue Service regulations," Kreitzer wrote. "As a result of this review, we determined that per diem needs to be treated as income, requiring a revision of W-2 forms for any affected employees." I'm not defending anything. billvon 3,070 #16 February 19, 2009 Funny, she sure is singing a different tune now! Back in September: “Every action taken by Governor Palin was open and transparent,” said Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign. “It is only logical that if she is traveling for the government, that her expenses be paid for.” I guess it was so open and transparent that it took six months to figure out that she had to pay taxes, eh? > I just think you should get your facts straight before preaching and >bitching. Oh, I'm not bitching. I think it's great that she's at least paying taxes on the money she took from the government to live at home. I am just amused by the knee-jerk response that requires any conservative to attack anything a democrat does and defend anything a republican does. I can only imagine the shrill screams of outrage that would emanate from your keyboard if you discovered a democrat who was given $17,000 of taxpayer money to live in their own house. She got paid per diem for living in HER OWN HOUSE - and is now annoyed that she has to pay taxes on the money! It's equivalent to a politician complaining they shouldn't have to pay taxes on money they stole from the government. That's bullshit. She turned the meals in as an expense, and they paid it! How is that fraud? She didn't lie or cover it up. Not stealing. Now the state wants to call it income, fine. May not look like a small government governor, but it IS an entirely different situation from several people who know what income to report, but don't. In any case, isn't the Obama administration supposed to be BETTER in this new era of responsibility and change? Ha. What a bunch of shit. You guys keep believing it. Maybe it'll come true. Here's what is true: 1. State officials have stated that Palin definitely did not pay taxes that she should have, and they have ordered her to do so. 2. Obama's chief of staff might be liable for back taxes, and could be guilty of mis-representing his living arrangements, and may even have to pay them back. One definitely looks much worse than the other at the moment. Any equation of these two scenarios is a very far reach to the right.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. billvon 3,070 #23 February 20, 2009 > She turned the meals in as an expense, and they paid it! No. She got per diem (money paid to people who are staying in another city to cover meals and lodging) while she was LIVING IN HER OWN HOUSE. An equivalent - let's say your company pays per diem. You tell them you're going on a business trip, because you are driving from your home to your usual place of work. That's a business trip, right? You charge them mileage, meals, and housing. Your house is like a hotel, right? And since you told them it was a business trip, it's all perfectly OK and legal, right? It would be fun to hear you explain to them how it's not fraud. > She didn't lie or cover it up. Not stealing. Riiiight. Lines like that are why the McCain/Palin ticket lost last year. She's against government waste! and has the government pay her to live in her own house. She's against earmarks! except when they're for Alaska. She's well read! except she doesn't read papers. She's the classic Republican. A staunch defender of honesty, integrity and small government, as long as she doesn't have to be held to those standards herself. Those are for _other_ people. >In any case, isn't the Obama . . . Excellent attempt to change the subject! "But Obama . . ."

State officials have stated that Palin definitely did not pay taxes that she should have, and they have ordered her to do so.Quote Wrong - so your "Here's what is true" statement is proven a lie right out of the box. Maybe you should have read the article: Quote"At the Governor's request, we reviewed the situation to determine whether we were in full compliance with the pertinent Internal Revenue Service regulations," Kreitzer wrote. "As a result of this review, we determined that per diem needs to be treated as income, requiring a revision of W-2 forms for any affected employees." So, prior to the review, she was NOT liable for the taxes. After the review and the change in status of the per diem payments, she is now liable.
