rushmc 23 #26 April 4, 2009 Quote Quote And this Quote The Arctic has indeed undergone some warming in some areas, especially Greenland, a warming that culminated in a summer temperature high of 5 degrees C in 2007. The gradual melt has opened up the prospect of newly navigable seaways - and a rush for the Arctic's energy-rich deepwater reserves. The reality is, however, warming periods are nothing new to the Arctic. When the Vikings settled Greenland they grew crops in temperatures higher than those of today. The media has also made much of the potential opening of the Northwest Passage. But it rarely mentions that similar weather patterns prevailed in the 1930s when two boats, the Nascopie and Aklavik, famously met up in the Passage in 1937. In October 2008, a study by Ohio University confirmed that current Arctic warming patterns mimic those in the 1920s-1940s. By July 2008 the Arctic ice had increased by nearly half a million square miles over the same first half year period in 2007. A NASA study published in the peer-reviewed Geophysical Research Letters in October 2007 had already noted that thinning Arctic ice was more likely the result of "unusual winds" that had blown "older thicker" ice into warmer southern waters. In other words, the Arctic warming experienced more recently could well be the result of the unusual strength of winds, not man-made warming. And all this time I thought winds were caused by the gods farting. Uh . . . strong winds ARE the result of differences in pressure brought about by . . . (wait for it) . . . temperature differences. And is this not a debate on what/who is cause the temp differences? Now you are trolling right?"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." lawrocket 3 #43 April 4, 2009 Quote Quote Climate change is melting glaciers. makes sense to me as well Would you then agree that if glaciers are thickeing that it would also be climate change? I wouldn't. I can look east to the mountains and view snow melting. Icebergs are formwd by glaciers breaking apart, right? They are nothing new. Ice shelfs collapsing? Hmm. How big was this shelf in, oh, 1600? I would also find it reasonable to belive that the ice shelves (a lot of them) were thicker in 1860 than in 1600. Or in 1300 (the end of the Medievel Climate Optimum). We don't know the thickness or extent of the ice shelf back then, do we? My wife is hotter than your wife. billvon 2,998 #44 April 4, 2009 >I note that there has been an unpredented lull in sunspots of late. Yep. Not sure of your point there, though. Lull in sunspots = reduction in total insolation on the planet. You'd expect the planet to get cooler. But it's not; it's gradually warming. What do you think would happen if the sun resumed its normal output?

lawrocket 3 #46 April 5, 2009 I turned off my oven. Five minutes later it was still hot. A couple hours later, it was still significantly warmer. Solstice will be in June. The Sun will be getting further away and the daylight getting shorter and yet the temperature will be higher in July and August where I live. Clear evidence of man's effect. Has the planet gradually warmed since February? My point on sunspots is that we are seeing something "unprecedented" in its scope. Well, it's probably happened a time or two in the last few billion years. But our ability to detect them is vastly better than it used to be. We know more. Welve detected far more gamma ray bursts in just the last few years than in all of history before Gagarin took his first ride into space. They've most likely happened before we recorded them, right? Why does this not apply in climatology? My wife is hotter than your wife.

So I guess you no longer believe that global warming ended in 1998, right? For the record, I agree. It's not a done deal. Anthropogenic global warming will continue until we humans make sufficient efforts to stop it, and perhaps only then if we do so in a timely manner.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour!
