A NASA study published in the peer-reviewed Geophysical Research Letters in October 2007 had already noted that thinning Arctic ice was more likely the result of "unusual winds" that had blown "older thicker" ice into warmer southern waters. In other words, the Arctic warming experienced more recently could well be the result of the unusual strength of winds, not man-made warming.

My point on sunspots is that we are seeing something "unprecedented" in its scope. Well, it's probably happened a time or two in the last few billion years.

But our ability to detect them is vastly better than it used to be. We know more.

Welve detected far more gamma ray bursts in just the last few years than in all of history before Gagarin took his first ride into space. They've most likely happened before we recorded them, right?
