Obama to cut $100 million in federal spending

Recommended Posts

Saving federal money the easy way

THE SPIN:

"He will challenge his Cabinet to cut a collective $100 million in the next 90 days," said a White House news release. "Agencies will be required to report back with their savings at the end of 90 days."

"I'm asking for all of them to identify at least $100 million in additional cuts to their administrative budgets," Obama told reporters afterward...

THE FULLER STORY:

Cut a latte or two out of your annual budget and you've just done as much belt-tightening as President Barack Obama asked of his Cabinet on Monday.

The thrifty measures Obama ordered for federal agencies are the equivalent of asking a family that spends $60,000 in a year to save $6...

I seem to recall W's first 100 days:

1. Proposed a $1.6 trillion budget to Congress.
2. Bombed Iraq, then proposed a $5 billion increase in military spending.
3. Saved a few thousand dollars eliminating federal aid for contraception (well, it's a start, think of all the new taxpayers we're going to have in 10 years)
4. Stopped a new requirement for coal-burning power plants to reduce emissions (8 days after he said exactly the opposite). Didn't save the government any money, but made huge profits for the power corporations, at the expense of the environment.

And Obama is asking for a $100 million cut. Are we sure W wasn't a tax-n-spend democrat, and Obama doesn't listen to Rush?

John, I'm wondering how people would react if he had, for instance, spent $100 thousand dollars of tax payer money on something like a study to see if a rational way could be approached to keeping guns out of the hand of criminals by licensing.

Would that be too much money spent or, like this, too little?

I only bring it up because I think people are going to bitch no matter what he does. I see saving $100 million dollars as a step in the right direction, even if it is a baby step.

I suspect that I'm part of a minority of Americans who still believe that $100 million is a lot of money.

It is, however, comical to watch the same people (not specific to DZ.commers) who criticize Obama for spending too much money out of one side of their face while criticizing him for calling on his Cabinet to find ways to cut administrative costs out of the other side.

100 million saved is 100 million saved. That is a plus in my book, and I am not marking it down as a bad thing.

It is the spin that cracks me up.

Really? In the first 100 days? Hmmmm.

On day 28 of Bush's presidency, he ordered military strikes against Iraq. American bombs destroyed radar stations near the capital, Baghdad, killing two people, according to the government of Iraq. This was before the full scale invasion that happened later.

>so if Obama got a 4 trillion $ budget that would be ok if he cut spending
>in the whitehouse by 200 million?

You'd rather him raise spending by $100 million than cut spending by $100 million? If so, that's fine, I'll put you in the "spend and borrow, spend and borrow" category.

Slight difference between an increase proposed by Congress and a budget cut proposed by Obama. He went along with the bail-outs, but he's actually proposing the cuts.

I can save more than that just by changing the type of metal the penny is made out of.

What would you change it from, and what to?

I would rather see him veto the budget, make them reduce it, and cover the reductions with savings like he is propopsing now. Remember Obama said " out of control and reckless spending has brought us to were we are now" Now it is time for Obama to take control and be less reckless and less out of control than his predisessor. or was he lying? seems to me he was from what i have seen for the first 100 days. What has happened from my viewpoint is increased out of control and recless spending

Coming up next week in Speaker's Corner:

OBAMA VETOES GUN CONTROL ACT

"What a fucking hypocrite! Maybe now people will see what a lying scumbag he is. He clearly doesn't mean it, and will be back to grabbing my guns in no time."

OBAMA CUTS TAXES ON RICH

"Oh, a 2% cut? What's that, one vacation? Until he makes REAL tax cuts he deserves to be voted out of office."

OBAMA ORDERS SUCCESSFUL STRIKE ON PIRATE STRONGHOLD

"Obama is about to get a real-life lesson in terrorism that doesn't play well to his teleprompter."

OBAMA SAVES 2-YEAR OLD FROM DROWNING

"What a jerk. Here's a news article of a Minnesota kid who drowned. But I guess Obama would rather let a kid in the midwest die because 'they cling to their guns' and instead save a kid from liberal DC. Murderer."
