I'm not sure what the definition of republicans is, at this point, but here's an email I got from a friend of mine (a real, bona fide friend--he was my roommate for 4 years in college and I was the best man at his wedding--it's not some random chain email) on the 4th of July. He lives in Orange County, California, where he is a freedom fighter (actually he's a tax attorney, but these days it seems revolutionary to fight the government to help people keep what's theirs). I'm pretty sure he's a registered Republican, although the fact that he's an atheist may disqualify him from being a "real" one. Fascinatingly, he also attended the University of Chicago school of law while Barack Obama was teaching there. Quote Happy Fourth of July, Everyone. Today we celebrate those brave souls who once called themselves "Sons of Liberty" in defiance of the most powerful government on Earth. We celebrate the day they announced a revolution in Boston with the now famous declaration that all men are created equal, and endowed by their creator with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that government exists for the sole purpose of defending those rights. Let us also remember the efforts and sacrifices of all the underground railroaders, union soldiers, segregation defiers and others who have fought to make those ideals a reality since they were first written by a slaveholding hypocrite. Most of all let us celebrate every individual who today gives that declaration meaning by pursuing happiness in their own individual way - regardless of the petty tyranny and creeping collectivism currently in vogue. Let us hope that the do-gooders, know-it-alls, luddites, holier-than-thous, brothers-keepers, and union bosses among us who seek to smother us in their warm blanket of social security will one day suddenly wake up and realize that "society does not exist" - only individuals do - and that every individual deserves the pleasure of making their short life on this Earth fulfill their own designs. Let us also hope that all of the poor souls elsewhere in the world who are oppressed by more virulent strains of tyrant will someday breath the fresh air of freedom.
