Should CBS Fire Letterman?

Recommended Posts

Do you REALLY think it would be that hard to find one?

HHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ok how about the past 20 years of calling people anti-american? If that example isn't sufficient for you, find one yourself. Just search "rush limbaugh hatred" or "tom leykiss says women are nothing but sperm depositories." Now that your pedestal is broken i'll move on...
(And your tag is false. It is possible to consistently not know what you are talking about and come to a false conclusion... [and thereby have an invalid argument... which breaks your "law"] like what Bush must have thought about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction-this would derail the thread if you kept going, but feel free to email me for a quick logic lesson)

[qoute]
>Maybe. But I suppose if the Palin family deserves an apology, then all
>the families Rush Limbaugh and Tom Leykiss have offended in the past
>would deserve one too.

True - but that doesn't change what the right thing is for Letterman to do. I would hope he would do the right thing irregardless of what others did (or didn't) do.

It doesn't?
I guess I must have missed the universal ethical criterion by which we determine when it is "right" for some comedians to smear people and "wrong" for others to do so.

To be clear, I have never heard of Tom Leykiss so I cant speak to him.

And the example is as you spelled out in and earlier post so

I await for a specific example from Limbaugh, Hanity or O'Riely that is in the context of your first point and not some kind of wild rant gerneralization like you just posted

Bullcrap. Enough with the semantics game.

He made the joke without knowing which daughter was at the game.

So hang on, which is it? Is it bullshit, or do you agree with Andy?:S

It's bullshit, period. Both the 'apology' for the joke and the the weasel-wording by Andy.

Letterman grabbed an opportunity to slam Palin and her daughter and it blew up in his face - he figured it was an easy slam of his social inferiors (you know, that "slutty flight attendant" that Andy likes).

Which daughter was at the game was immaterial - he basically called Palin and her daughters sluts and whores and, of coure, none of the lefties in here have a problem with it.

“These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl."

But raping or having sex of any descriptions with an 18 year old girl... hey, go for it.... they're all sluts anyway, right Dave?

I guess for his next show, he can make jokes about how Michelle's arms are so toned because she's giving BO handjobs under the desk or Ashley Biden turning tricks in Times Square for a line of blow.

The reaction to those jokes, in comparison to the Palin one, would be the real punchline.

The capper, from a Palin spokesperson:

“The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Capper, indeed. The Palins lost a bunch of my sympathy with that remark. They couldn't just let has-been Letterman's comments speak for themselves...they had to use their daughter to take a jab at him. Not much better, imo.

>Which daughter was at the game was immaterial . . .

Uh, no, it's not. Making jokes about casual sex is not the same as making jokes about statutory rape.

>he can make jokes about how Michelle's arms are so toned because
>she's giving BO handjobs under the desk . . .

That might actually be funny (unlike the Palin joke.)

I don't think Letterman should be fired. Nor did I think Imus should have been fired. The joke was in poor taste and Palin is taking advantage of it. It's all a game.

Prejean was first runner up. Anyone know the name off the top of their head of the winner of that particular pageant? Me either. Prejean is brilliant!

Maybe Palin is taking advantage of it (I had not thought of that) but, for the rest

+1
It is the hypocrisy that is the point of the thread.
Lefties have a hard time seeing what hypocrisy really is.

That sounds as partisan as the right's response to Letterman here. I see nothing wrong with that response.

Though I think Paris Hilton handled the McCain crack much better.

Even Sangiro has a rule on this site that jokes about pedophilia would never be tolerated and will be enforced by you Bill and Quade.

Oh gimme a fuckin' break. If you actually think the joke was maliciously made by him about a 14-year-old then maybe you have a valid point of view, but I'm nearly certain you're wrong about the circumstance. I'm nearly 100% certain he just didn't know which daughter was at the game.

It was clearly a mistake, but Letterman isn't such a big idiot to have consciously attacked the 14-year-old. Sorry. No matter what you may think of him, look at his career history. He regularly works with kids on the show. He knows what's off limits. Me made a mistake and now some falsely righteous indignant blow hards are making a mountain out of a fuckin' mole hill.

Get over it.

The game was Sunday afternoon. There was news coverage of Palin and Willow. Letterman's show taped/aired Monday. Tuesday, he made yet ANOTHER 'joke' about Spitzer going after Willow.

If he didn't know Willow was at the game by Monday afternoon (and after 24 hours there's no real excuse for that), he DAMN sure knew it by Tuesday....and he did the 'joke' anyway.

THERE'S your "fucking break" - own it.

Nothing partisan about it, I love a good response as much as the next guy, and I have no beef with the Palins. My issue is that, considering joking about the Palin daughters is what got Letterman in hot water, it is not very appropriate to turn right around and bring her up again to make fun of someone.

[reply]Chelsea Clinton was off limits during the 90s. Then-candidate Obama declared his family off limits. How is it okay to then infer a statutory rape of a 14 year old? As for the excuse of "I didn't know it was Willow at the game"...it doesn't matter...why joke about anyone's daughter getting knocked up in celebrity/comidial/political fashion...even in this case, pedophilia...

Should Letterman be fired. No.

Is he a nit-wit...oh yeah...

what fucking alternate universe were you living in back them ?
the one I'm had had countless slurs and snide remarks about Chelsea on right-wing ... oh wait, talk radio. I used to think, i'm glad I'm not Bill be3cause I'd have to go to some of those studios and kick some serious ass....

did Letterman fuck up, yes
but he obviously meant the 'other one' you know, the one of age who got knocked up once already ... and he didn't say anything about rape ... but hey, i'm sure THAT"s all over right-wing (oh yeah, i meant 'talk') radio...

any semi sane, semi intelligent person understood his reference and PALIN brought the 'ho into the public spotlight in the first place ...

so a quiet apology by him would be OK, but it's not even mandatory ... he did not mean what all the Rushie yahoos are spouting ... so if he doesn't, who really cares... those of us with half a brain know what he meant ...

Then maybe you can take the OTHER half and explain away the news reports on Sunday (you know, the day BEFORE Letterman showed his ass?) that said that WILLOW was at the game with her mother.

Then you can work on explaining away the "joke" about Spitzer that he shit out on TUESDAY.

the only reason this story has ANY legs is because it is being inflated and misconstrued and slanted to take ALL attention away from the REAL news...

that being that PALIN was 'uninvited' from addressing some major Republican function because she and her staff screwed the pooch and flip-flopped over and over on whether she would be there... demonstrating sparkling organizational skills among her and her staff...

and now I suppose we hear on 'talk' propaganda(oops .. I mean radio) how some despicable 'liberal' has made some outrageous statement about her and bestiality ..... anything to shift the focus from how incompetent the 'slutty' stewardess look-alike is ...

and I'm a liberal, like Attila was a Sierra club member, but that's how the lying little Goebbels wannabes would spin it////

>Andy said "he was talking about the 18 year old"
>MNeal said "he didn't even know which one he was talking about"

He made the joke about the 18 year old - and clearly did not know who was at the game. It was a failure on his part to even understand the situation he was trying to make fun of.

Out of everything that's going on in the world, that's what qualifies as "real news" to you? The governor of Alaska's wardrobe, speaking engagements, and organizational skills? Your subscriptions to Vogue and People could keep you informed on that front.

What conservative got fired recently for telling tasteless jokes?

In fact, what right wing wingnut got fired for advocating or rejoicing in the death of Dr. Tiller ? None.

Letterman's boosting his ratings while Conan is taking over the Tonight Show. If you don't like Letterman, don't fucking watch him.

That is all.

People like Letterman (and Leno, probably Conan and anyone else doing this type of show as well) have been making fun of and implying the slutty nature of young people like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and more recently underage girls like Miley Cyrus for years... and no one appeared to care then.

So is it only a problem now that the joke may have referred to the daughter of a high-ranking member of one of the two major political parties?

9. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.

I wasn’t super offended by this, the whole black quarterback/coach thing has been going on for years in sports, but the quote was so offensive that Retired General Wesley Clarke said:

There can be no excuse for such statements. Mr. Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants, but ABC and ESPN have no obligation to sponsor such hateful and ignorant speech. Mr. Limbaugh should be fired immediately

Really man? I mean... REALLY?
Not that you have specifically stated that Rush hasnt offended MILLIONS of people in the past... you were just looking for an example of such a case.

But REALLY? Do you seriously need me to spoon-feed you a situation in which millions of people have been offended by his remarks to be convinced of my statement that he has done so?
Nevermind whether or not the "information" he disperses about people is true or not, or that his position is respectable or well-constructed. That is not what you want. What you want here is a situation in which Rush has offended a group of people in the past. It is no secret that he has done so. (Although, I suppose, those of us who aren't as capable of recognizing such information might need to be assisted. In which case, I withdraw my evaluation of you, because in that case you simply need assistance as opposed to being guilty of a political neurosis)

Also, I must apologize for your waiting so eagerly for my response. I was actually skydiving this weekend, that is, not waiting around for someone else I have never met to make conclusions for me.

Insert emoticon to appear more like a smart-ass like rushmc here.

Ah, it is not a problem with me. I have never advocated the firing of anybody. Free markets forces will take care of it IMO.
