dreamdancer 0 #1 June 19, 2009 about time... QuoteThe U.S. Senate approved a fiercely worded resolution Thursday formally apologizing for the "fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery" of African-Americans. The unanimous voice vote came five months after Barack Obama became the first black US president, and ahead of the June 19 "Juneteenth" celebration of the emancipation of African-Americans at the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1865. The non-binding resolution now heads to the House of Representatives, where a similar resolution passed by voice vote in July 2008, only to wither in the upper chamber. House approval, which could come as early as next week, would make it the first time the entire US Congress has formally apologized on behalf of the American people for one of the grimmest wrongs in US history. The bill, which does not require Obama's signature, states that the US Congress "acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow laws" that enshrined racial segregation at the state and local level in the United States well into the 1960s. The Congress "apologizes to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow laws." And it "expresses its recommitment to the principle that all people are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and calls on all people of the United States to work toward eliminating racial prejudices, injustices, and discrimination from our society." http://www.alternet.org/rss/3/62624/u.s._senate_votes_formal_apology_for_slavery/stay away from moving propellers - they bite blue skies from thai sky adventures good solid response-provoking keyboarding

lawrocket 3 #13 June 19, 2009 This is awesome! It's all better now. Now we need not feel bad about it anymore and we can finally turn the page on that dark chapter of our history. Brilliance. Of course, if that it not the situation then this is nothing except "let us in the senate makes others feel good about what caring people we are." My wife is hotter than your wife. Since forms of race-based slavery continued in the United States well past the midpoint of the 20th century, it would appear that the deaths of all of those Soldiers did not accomplish the mission of ending slavery in the US. Of course, we could argue if ending slavery had anything to do with the mission they were given til the cows come home, but that doesn't change the point that the United States: 1) Officially allowed race-based slavery in at least parts of its territory for the better part of a century 2) Allowed unofficial race-based slavery in parts of its territory for over a century beyond the end of the civil war If those don't seem like things you think a nation should apologize for, so be it.
