Our nation lives, and remains great. We are perched to slip into socialism, however.

Exactly! And it's all the illegal immigrants who are doing it - mainly Mexicans.

Why should the Mexicans be suffered to swarm into our cities, and by herding together establish their language and manners to the exclusion of ours? Why should California and Texas, founded by Americans, become a colony of aliens, who will soon be so numerous as to Mexicanize us instead of our Americanizing them, and will never adopt our language or customs, any more than they can acquire our complexion?

Yep. Totally. There are very special ways of measuring self-worth out there, and market-orientation isn't one of them for me. (One of the methods being the ethical standards laid out in religion... you should know that being a mormon and all)

Actually, measuring yourself in terms of the total dollar value you are worth or "marketing yourself to employers" happens pretty often in capitalistic societies. Wait a minute, isn't that the kind of society that you are defending here?

America isn't dead. It's more like a Cyberdyne Technolied T-1000 - changing shapes in response to the environmental cues and human desires, but no matter what the form, it's still a Terminator.

The way that we know that America is still alive is that we still have peaceful transitions of power. When there is a non-peaceful transition of power or a violent maintenance of power, America will be no more.

p.s. With my aforementioned rule it could be argued that the Civil War was a death of America. I understand that.

I would ask the question as to how many people from other countries wish to immigrate to the USA versus how many Americans wish to emigrate to other countries.

You hear a lot about how, for example, China is a country on the rise and America is in decline--but you see lots of Chinese trying to emigrate here and not too many Americans eager to emigrate to China.

If America were TRULY in decline you'd see another nation emerging as the world's prime destination for immigrants, and people from all countries--including America--lining up to get in there. I don't see that happening right now.

No, for the last few years it was on the critical list and in the CCU however its currently in the HDU short term prospect not that great but it looks like it will make a stable recovery and there is no reason why the USA shouldn't have a long and happy life. Of course like any high level business leader thats had a heart attack it won't go back to the high stress posistion it once had but it will do ok in a directors posistion with a larger board guiding the larger community into the future.

respect for America in much of the rest of the world is dead or at least badly wounded, but probably only a small % of Americans care I guess. I hope it improves, I dont think its a healthy situation.
