bfilarsky 0 #1 July 26, 2009 http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_12914925 Legalize and tax drugs - don't outlaw them. Rather than spending money (and lots of it) on something people are going to do regardless, how about making money on it? The government seems to be catching on after many decades. Just a disclaimer - I don't use pot, so am not advocating on those grounds. Just think its stupid for the government to lock people up (spending my tax dollars) for a drug less dangerous than alcohol.
TomAiello 26 #2 July 26, 2009 Honestly, I think they're going to screw this up, too. Did you see that Oakland had revamped it's tax rates to increase the business tax on Medical Marijuana dispensaries by an order of magnitude (from less than 2 bucks per thousand in sales to more than 20)? And that's not including the sales tax. Differential taxation based on your personal morals is ridiculous. Look at how people are smuggling cigarettes already because of the punitive taxes on them, it seems like a huge mistake to push marijuana into that realm, too.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
jloirsdaan 0 #3 July 27, 2009 Yep, Oakland has a 9.95% sales tax on the medical cannabis dispensaries already, and it used to be less than $2 per thousand in sales....it's now right around $20 per thousand. It was already being taxed, they just increased it. I've been a medical cannabis patient for almost a year now. Just more money out of my pocket......like I said, we were already paying taxes. However, I am pretty sure this law includes all sales of marijuana, in other words, if it is ever legalized for all, the tax is already in place. Jordan Go Fast, Dock Soft.
