Rep. Dianne Watson recently held a town hall meeting during which she injected race into the health care debate (totally unpredictable) and praised Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. YGBSM! Apparently, Americans by the thousands are building makeshift rafts from old Ford trucks and sailing them to Cuba to get necessary health care. Why doesn't the media cover this mass exodus?

And the hits just keep on rollin'

Interestingly, BTW Rush Limbaugh last year was one of the few to speak up and predict that if Obama was elected, anyone who disagreed with his policy would be branded as racist.
The forecast is mostly sunny with occasional beer.

what I can't believe is that this is an elected official that said this. I think the left doesn't care who they elect as long as they support murdering babies and saving convicted killers.

You know, "the left" is no more a monolithic bloc than "the right" is.

I'd imagine that either she was referring to anecdotal evidence (and it's entirely possible that someone traveled to Cuba for something medical -- people travel to all sorts of countries outside the USA for medical stuff), or it was taken out of context.

If she's using anecdotal evidence to prove a point, it's probably bullshit. But Cuba is not the big evil, any more than we are the big evil that Hugo Chavez is calling us.

As far as "the left" and who they elect, I'm well to the left of you, and I prefer to elect intelligent, articulate, thoughtful representatives. I voted against Tom DeLay, for Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and for Nick Lampson. I've been happy with those choices.

That's amazing. When does a regime become evil to you?

They've killed thousands who dissent or try to escape. There's no due process, massive censorship, deploring conditions in their political prisons, they are stuck in the 50's...... Does individual freedom mean anything anymore?

Just amazing.

Cuba is full of people.

A former poster in SC who is generally very conservative in his approach described how his wife had worked with Cuban doctors, and she admired some of their skill, especially given the limited resources they had.

The fact that their regime sucks does not make the whole country, or its people, worthless or evil. The world is full of people living in countries that we disagree with. Most of those people feel as though they are at home when they go to bed at night (even when they disagree). Most of those people want to have enough to eat, and for their children to have a better life than they do. Even when you live in a shithole, it's home, because it's your shithole. How else does one explain people who stay in neighborhoods that are contaminated?

Individual freedom means a lot to me. Including the freedom to disagree.

I'll buy her some swimmies and a compass, somebody kick her ass off at Key West and she can head for her promised land.

A rather decent number of Americans travel there in spite of the travel ban and it's hardly as bad as you suggest. Just communist. But if it weren't for the Miami Cubans, we'd have normalized relations in the 90s.

As for the original subject - I don't do yubetube at work, but I can imagine.

Have you been there? Do you think they'd let you see the - how did Wendy put it - "sucky" parts of the place if you had?

Just communist? Really? An oppressive communist regime that kills and imprisons dissidents. A rich history of human rights disasters. But they're not so bad, just communist.

I'm sure you do. C'mon. You know what my point is. Property, income, wealth. Same thing. Its my belief that no one should decide how to dispose of it but me. That is the basic human right that excessive American government tramples on, and its the same basic human right that Che and Fidel and Marx triumphantly snuff out. To me you either believe in it as an absolute, or you're one of them. Yes, some tax is necessary to run the minimal government we need, but the obese beast we have now is truly disgusting.

that obese beast has built up simply to protect your property rights - army, police, lawyers, accountants, bankers, politicians, prisons - all to protect your property rights :)

I think the discussion was about the regime, though, not the people. Unless you're saying that the fact the regime sucks doesn't say anything about the dictator who formed and leads it, as he was the only Cuban "person" referenced in the original post.

Wow, I guess you got me there......:S

If the word absolute in this context is a bit strong, I'm sure you understand the ability to distinguish necessary government functions (ie those required to preserve individual liberty), and nanny state spending, (ie forced savings, forced charity, etc.)

Actually, I think that's what the political debate in this country is primarily about: where to draw the line. If it were as obvious as you think it is, we would have no need for Speakers Corner.

True, it's just amazing to me that we're debating a line drawn in the USC red zone, when we should, according to the constitution, be near the opposite goal line. B| And when in doubt we should err on the side of liberty and personal responsibility. Back to the original post, it is equally amazing to me, and a sign of the times, when an elected official sworn to uphold said constitution, praises Che and Fidel, and speaks of "kicking out the wealthy" and many don't see the evil in that.

Even though I believe the country's center is waaaaay too far left, the buffoonery of Ms. Watson is that she doesn't see how invoking Marxist regimes is going to hurt her cause with the center that they need..... So I for one am thankful for buffoonery.
