jcd11235 0 #27 September 18, 2009 QuoteI'm 44. WTF is new math? When I was in fifth or sixth grade, many years ago, new math was the term that was used to introduce students to the concept of algebraic variables sooner than previously done. For example: Old math: 3+7=__ New math 3+7=x, solve for x. Or, 3·n=12, solve for n. It was arithmetic taught algebraically to get students used to the concept of variables and equation manipulation. It was considered "new" because a lot of parents were from an era when reading, writing, and arithmetic was enough to prepare you for life, not just middle school, and they had very little, if any, exposure to algebraic variables. I've always assumed what my school considered new math was the same as the new math I heard about later in life, but I could be wrong. Now, as I understand, mathematics is taught using basic algebraic notation from nearly the beginning.Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! I was raised during the new math/whole language period, too, and seem to be able to put together a coherent sentence. So can a whole lot of other people. Anyway, if a poor education is such a disadvantage, what does it say about the possibility of children to rise above their circumstances? What is "whole language?" Let the kid spell it like it sounds. Little or no phonics. They figure you will figure out the correct spelling in time. The idea being that some kids lose the creative spark of writing because spelling doesn't come naturally, and they get turned off. Of course, the idea wasn't to just let kids figure out spelling on their own. If teachers actually taught it that way, they weren't doing it right. It just divorced writing from spelling, treating them as separate skills. It is supposed to better teach kids who aren't rote learners. As a non-rote-learner, I kind of appreciate this approach, personally. But some rote learners do better with a phonics-based approach. Obviously whole language doesn't ruin everyone. The short, easy quip here is that it only ruins conservatives who can't spell , but that's probably not accurate. And, of course, the best answer is to have smaller classes, with teachers who can individualize instruction to each child. But that would actually cost money (in schools) or time and effort (if done at home), so we can't have that. (my mom was on the school board at the time and she still talks about it) The teachers however kept the phonics in despite being told not to use that tech. I would have really been screwed had they not done that By the way, My gratuation class was 18 strong"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Fixed that for you - I know you can't use it as a slam against Palin like that, but sometimes it sucks here in the reality-based world.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
