Yet that's just what the U.N. body did this morning, in a resolution that was as striking for the way member states voted as it was for its substance. All 10 nonpermanent members voted for the resolution, along with permanent members Russia, China and the United Kingdom. France and the United States abstained. By U.N. rules, that means the resolution passes.

The U.S. abstention is sending shock waves through the international community, which has long been accustomed to the U.S. acting as Israel's de facto protector on the Council.

I find this shocking. Nothing good is going to come out of this. Obama is proving to be a truly dangerous person.

Obeying international law and dismantling weapons which could end the species - Yeah what a shocking and not good thing.

Iran's crime is its independence. Having thrown out America's favourite tyrant, Shah Reza Pahlavi, Iran remains the only resource-rich Muslim state beyond US control. As only Israel has a "right to exist" in the Middle East, the US goal is to cripple the Islamic Republic. This will allow Israel to divide and dominate the Middle East on Washington's behalf, undeterred by a confident neighbour. If any country in the world has been handed urgent cause to develop a nuclear "deterrence", it is Iran.

As one of the original signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran has been a consistent advocate of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East. In contrast, Israel has never agreed to an IAEA inspection, and its nuclear weapons plant at Dimona remains an open secret. Armed with as many as 200 active nuclear warheads, Israel "deplores" UN resolutions calling on it to sign the NPT, just as it deplored the recent UN report charging it with crimes against humanity in Gaza, just as it maintains a world record for violations of international law. It gets away with this because great power grants it immunity.

You do realize that the date posted/headline date is "Jan. 20, 2010," yes?

Mohamed ElBaradei's term ends in November 2009 as well.

1) NO ONE QUESTIONS GODS CHOSEN PEOPLE! :P
That's if you believe in imaginary friends.

2) It's sad when one country makes Iran look good! I mean really talk about diving into the deep end of the pool!

From what I have read, and I'm Persian so i have a bit of insider information, Iran doesn't want Isreal to be cleaned off the map. The way it reads thus far is that Iran wishes for Isreal to give equal rights to all the Palestinians living with in it's boundaries.

Which Iran will then utilize to overthrow the Jewish government via the utilization of a democratic process. It's all legit really :)

It's on today's opinion page. I just went back to it and it's dated OCTOBER 5, 2009, 11:33 P.M. ET

Yes, it was published in Monday's Opinion section.

Look further down. Right above "New York."

Hypocrisy has been the US approach towards Israel. So its good if they apply the same logic to every one and not give Israel a free pass as they usually do.

One of the main reasons we are hated is because of the hypocrisy in our foreign policy. It would be good if we actually stood for something ,and applied the same belief to all without exceptions.

While it isn't exactly a measure of how much a country is or isn't hated, "America Is Now the Most Admired Country Globally." Up from #7 in 2008.

And the importance isn't popularity per se, but that it makes executing and implementing US foreign policy less difficult.

Every thing has to do with perspective and how you measure good and bad.

If the only measure is how much money you can make, or how well the economy is doing then you have different priorities then I. Popularity matters, but even more important are the reasons why one is hated or loved.

Our hypocrisy is the reason we are hated not our freedom. In the past we have given Israel a free pass and applied different rules and opinions depending on how we feel about the people at the time. Not really a good way to apply justice, and that’s is how one loses respect.

Israel never signed the NPT. Iran did.

Ignoring of course the difference in rhetoric between the two nations. You remember, how one wants the other one obliterated and all.

BINGO!
In fact if you really want to scare your Israelie friends?
Simple tell them that they should do what South Africa did and give equal rights to the Palestinians. Due to the simple fact that if such a thing were to be done the terrorists would effectively have nothing to fight for.

Then stand back and watch as your Israelie friend turns a bunch of different colors, screams and passes out.
For ever Israelie there are up to 4 Palestinians, and if the Palestinians were given equal rights the Jewish state would and could effectively have a non Jewish head of state who has a tan and can't trace their recent ancestry to Europe.

Also for fun remind people that a cheese burgher is not Kosher.
