Would you try to disarm someone on the street?

Recommended Posts

Let's say you were trained in martial arts, and one of the focuses was disarming techniques; gun, knife, club, etc.

Now, let's say someone comes up to you (or you and a group of your friends/loved ones) on the street, points an aforementioned weapon at you, and asks for your money & valuables. Would you give everything up, or would you try to disarm the person?

How can this be (credibly) answered in the abstract? It depends totally not only on the victim's skill set, but on the individual circumstances. Having said that, it should be interesting to see how much keyboard kommando dick-swinging this generates.

>kommando dick-swinging
Bwahhhh:D

Swinging your dick in this situation is ill advised especially if the person has a knife.

If then you have a disarmingly freakishly large dick- that might buy a few seconds of distraction though, and draw a crowd.:|

-And at which time someone can squat behind them then you can push them over Three Stooges style

Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires.

That's why I have a CCW and dummy wallet. If the dummy wallet doesn't work, its onto the .40 cal.

I like the dummy wallet idea. Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, you could possibly have a more aggressive person in front of you, and a higher chance of being hurt. It's all about deescalating the situation. If they ask for your wallet, give them you wallet. You can always cancel your cards, get a new license, and in the case of military, get a new card, and set up countermeasures in case that person tries to steal your identity. No matter what's in your wallet, it isn't worth your life. If you're a CCW holder, you would not want to brandish the weapon unless you are absolutely sure your life is threatened, or somebody else is. If you don't have a CCW permit, and say, have a knife, I wouldn't consider using it unless you are trained in knife fighting. Many street fighting based techniques, like Krav Maga, and CQD that they teach to SEALs. Without a solid base on knife fighting techniques, you have a higher chance of being hurt, and/or having your own weapon turned against you.

It depends.

Far, far too many variables. Most of them depend on what level of skill the attacker demonstrates. And what level of threat he poses.

The use of force has to fit the situation, and I have to be flexible enough to allow for that.

"Stuff" isn't worth anyone's life. Even a bad guy (mainly because of the hassle that comes with even the most clear-cut self defense killing). But unfortunately, the bad guy isn't always satisfied with just your stuff. Story Here
Give them what they want, get killed anyway:(

And off to SC we go!!:P

Edit to add: And it depends on what my realistic options are.
If dude is already pointing a loaded gun at me, in a manner that disarming isn't feasible (it's called weapon retention training) then I'm screwed.
I can get a gun out and on target fast, but not that fast.

A person can be trained but until they are face to face with a nut holding a gun or a knife who knows if one could react. I would say just let the ass hat have the purse or wallet.

then lift and push

The Wonder Bra ads tell me they lift and separate. Maybe they are good for self-defense as well :P

A mugger or whatever brandishing a weapon gives enough reason to conclude they intend to use it.

That being said they had better be prepared to be out of the human gene pool.

Yes, but there is a hell of a difference between a small dude with a little knife and a big guy holding a loaded .357 in a way that I can't get to it.

And keep in mind that "Deadly Force" will have to be justified to the cops, prosecutor, and perhaps a judge and jury.
