Other than that there is not much else one can do. +1 I would get myself in to an area and as many people as possible that the "mad gunman" could only approach from one angle if I could not get out of the situation. I do have a gun so if he/she approached I would finish it myself. Darius11 12 #12 November 6, 2009 Well I usually look to see where and who is firing, then throw a smoke grenade at them and then a frag grenade. Then i tell every one else to run the other way. If the suspect or suspects live I take out my Minigun witch I carry in pants for disguise and level the two suspects and about a ¼ mile of what ever is behind them. All this off course after I put on my red headband and say "Terrorize THIS". Sorry its friday and i am goofy. So my answer is most people will shit there pants and freeze, very few people can keep their heads when there are guns going off. So I don’t think there is a standards procedure. You may have options (if running is one, take it), or you may have a limited deck. On a plane or a bus, you're pretty much trapped. Playing dead or attacking might be your options. When they do happen they are all over the news because they are so spectacular and so rare. AggieDave - you have real training, what would you recommend for civilians? And MrDree is right, if you are armed, be very careful not to target another armed citizen and not to become a target of one. Friendly fire isn't. Wild Bill Hickock reportedly shot one of his own deputies who came towards him with a gun out just after Hickock was attacked. The deputy was coming to Hickock's aid, but was seen as a threat and dealt with. The surprise element in one of these situations can be paralyzing. But (just like our own EPs) planning, practicing and being aware of your surroundings can help. (Jeff Cooper called it "condition Yellow). If I am caught in one, take cover, escape and evade, fight back. Just like in the disarm thread, it depends on what my options are then and there, and how I react. I am in the habit of being aware of alternate exits from most places I am in (stores, restauraunts, ect). I also prefer to sit where I can keep an eye on the door when I go out to eat. Paranoid? Maybe a little. Worth it in one of these rare situations? Again, like in skydiving, chance of situation occurring combined with potential consequences if it does occur combined with effort/cost of countermeasures."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The kind of person who commits this sort of crime will shoot you if you play dead. Will find you if you hide and won't listen if you plead. Run fast, run far and run fast. Use your phone to call 911. Give a good description, location and actions. There is some single response training given, but most response training for active shooters involves group tactics and moving quickly to the threat. Unless you have training on how to clear rooms, move tactically to a threat and the like, you'll probably get shot. Top that off with auditory and visual exclusion and you may miss the suspect's partner. Or you may miss the officers that are responding. You might miss a lot. So basically with out good training, run. And once in a "safe" position - CALL FOR HELP/BACKUP - MY HUSBAND, POLICE, MILITARY Do not try to "reason" with the mass murderer - won't work with psychotic killers. Do not try to take a fist/knife to that gun fight - even if your name is Chuck Norris. If you have a firearm, use it for personal protection only... DEFENSIVE. Do not go raging into a firefight and end up killing MORE innocents in the crossfire (and then get yourself killed by the local police when they show up and you're the only one standing... with a gun) (morbid humor... picturing someone in a cardboard box slowly walking through a room.
