Arkansas Cop Tasers 10-Year-Old Girl

Recommended Posts

Quote

The mayor of a small Arkansas town wants an independent investigation on whether it was appropriate for a police officer to use a Taser on an unruly 10-year-old girl who kicked him in the groin.

Mayor Vernon McDaniel says he wants Arkansas State Police or the FBI to look into whether the use of the Taser was proper. The girl, who hasn't been identified, wasn't hurt and is now at the Western Arkansas Youth Shelter in Cecil.

Ozark police were called to the home Nov. 11 after the girl's mother couldn't get the child to take a shower.

Ozark Police Chief Jim Noggle, who has defended the officer's action, didn't immediately return a call for comment Wednesday morning.

why are the police responding to a call about someone who will not take a shower?

A perfect example of where police intervention is probably not warranted, and then, as demonstrated, only ends up escalating into something it did not need to be in the first place?

What if the 10 year old grabbed a steak knife and swung it at the cop, and he shot her dead? Police would call it 'assault with a deadly weapon' and justify the shooting.

The police should never have gone there.

If a mother needs police help to get a ten year old to take a shower, a taser is the least of that family's problems.

the kid is now in a shelter; the mom should be tased. however, the cop should be fired and had his "groins kicked" by the whole town..

the chief of the police does not see anything wrong; he should be fired instantly as well!

WTF is wrong with the US of A!? :S:S:S

The cop better have a damn good reason for using a taser on a 10 year old.
But I will pass on judging the man's actions since the only info any of us here have at this time is a very short piece from news site. I would bet there's a lot more to it than just a kid not taking a shower and kicking a cop in the balls but, like I said, he better have a damn good reason.

Dood!
Cops only use tazers when their life is in danger!
Do you NOT understand the risk of bodily injury of dealing with an unshowwered prepubescent female?
I'm surprised he didn't call for backup or the SWAT team.
:S
Jesus we are turning into a police state. If the cops show up, it's bound to get out of control and someone will typically go to jail. >:(

I think you're overreacting. Cops, even in the US, are humans, and sometimes they unprofessionally lose their temper and improperly act that temper out. When they get caught, they get nailed for it. This guy lost it, got caught and now he's getting nailed for it. End of story.

So in their short history of widespread use it would appear that tasers have gone from being a "less-lethal" alternative to deadly force, to a means of ensuring compliance, and now one appears to have been used by an officer in retaliation.

:S[:/]

It looks that way from the info available at the time.
But, like I said, we don't know the whole story. I prefer to refrain from judgement until more info is out.

Have you ever had to deal with an out of control 10-15 year old kid? have you ever had to deal with the limitations buy the police and society on what you are able to do to control a kids actions?

I am sure we don't we don't have the entire story, but I have been put in situations with out of control kids and I can understand why she got tasered.

I think they pretty much gotta go when called. It probably came in as a domestic dispute, and while most are not lethal - enough are that they can not ignore based on what may or may not have been said during the call.

There was one in our neighborhood (5 miles away where we live is considered the neighborhood) that started over what was for dinner. It got called in, but became a homicide by the time the police showed.

Granted, there must have been more to the story than what was for dinner, just as there has to be more to this story than not wanting to take a shower; but I think they need to go when called.

I'm sure there is more to the story than is being reported. It is highly unlikely that a police officer would respond to a mother that calls 911 to complain that her daughter won't take a shower. I didn't have the same knee jerk reaction you did when I read the article.

As a father of three girls and having grown up with three sisters, I cannot imagine a 10 year old girl doing anything that would require a cop to taze her.
Maybe we should train some police in less violent methods of dealing with people?

To the best of my knowledge police are trained in less violent methods starting with calm negotiations. Problem is, when people don't respond to those methods and/or increase their level of hostility. That is the primary reason I believe there is more to the story than what has been told and I will wait until i hear more before condemning the cop.

A while back i read a news story about a cop who tasered a 70 year old woman over a traffic stop. My first thought was "WHY???" The a video of the incident came out and showed the cop warning her many, many times to back up or get tasered as she was in his face and getting dangerously close to traffic. In that case the cop did the best thing for both of them as attempting to wrestle her could very well have ended up with them on the roadway.

Likewise, it would appear that the girl is learning that there can be consequences for kicking a guy in the balls. I can't say I fear sorry for her.

If her mom had a taser the cops would have been able to continue eating donuts.

Damn straight. The mother needs some parenting classes. I will absolutely NOT let my kids rebel like that. They will be well behaved and say "please", "thank you", etc and do what they are told.

Unfortunately, it's generally not in mothers' natures to be strict and use discipline when needed. I have noticed that despite my wife's best efforts to tell our older girl (3.5 yrs) to do something, sometimes she will not listen. That's when I come in and lay down the law. She complies without hesitation 90% of the time. The rest is spent in Time-out.

However, this little 10 year old girl, if the story is accurate, sounds like the girl in The Exorcist. A 10 year old girl in full tantrum mode is not going to listen to reason or calm down, and I suspect the cop did not want to manhandle her for fear of causing injuries, so the taser was used. That's my opinion.

Of course, people have died from being tased, so there's really no good that will come out of this incident for the cop in question, publicity-wise.

Where's the dad in this case?

The 10 yr old kicked a police office in the groin. That's assulat, on a police officer to top it off.

Too many emotions running high in this situation. Perhaps he thought the family would have joined in to defend the 10 year old if he tried to physically restrain her. I think in this case the girl being tazed was justified, but can't say for certain without for information on what all went on.
