WOW... we really need to think about this.

Agreed. We need to raise taxes as soon as the economy recovers, end the stimulus at the same time, and end the wars that are draining us dry.

Also we should cut entitlement programs and make people get jobs that have sucked welfare for over 2 years. send illegals home and let their government pay their way.

I think you'll find that sending all illegals home will cost us FAR FAR more than it saves.

make people get jobs

In many ways I agree with you, but have you seen the unemployment rate lately?

have you seen the want ads in the chicago area news papers?

Why don't you tell us the ratio between the number of jobs available and the number of people looking for work, Mark.

No, but I have seen them in the paper here in Toronto. I also know that working any of those jobs does not allow a person to actually live in Toronto either. I have this feeling it is very much the same in Chicago.

Secondly, just because there is a wanted ad in the paper doesn't mean there aren't a 1,000 people applying for that one job. The issue isn't the supply quantity but the delta between supply and demand.

OK, list em.

>and make people get jobs that have sucked welfare for over 2 years.

We already do that. The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act ends any assistance after two years.

>send illegals home . . . .

OK, if you pay for it. If not - well, sorry, we can't afford another multi-billion dollar government boondoggle.

1) that's not welfare
2) did you note that most of that story was false?

Where does it say most of it is not true? It says parts are taken from other events but the photo and several things said were tre especially in that version.

I don't really care about that story and it does nothing for me pro/con on the issue but it never said most of it is false.

How is subsidized housing not welfare?

And the pic certainly is real, and Snopes wrote it as mixed truth with satire.

But 'entitlements' that include FICA spending miss the point - until this year, SS has been running well in the black.

Right. The picture (and the situation as described by Snopes) is real, much of the commentary is made up.

Sounds like a semantic argument there.

It's housing assistance from the US HUD. How is that not a form of welfare? Are you distinguishing HUD from other departments in DC? Unemployment is state derived welfare. It's still part of the welfare system.

Section 8 is a mess to deal with, both for the landlords as well as for tenants who get a real slumlord type. I've done research for litigation where the Sec 8 oversight was atrocious- despite major violations in habitability, money kept going to the landlord.

I guess if you consider any assistance from the federal government "welfare" then it would be. I thought we were talking about the federal program called "welfare" which is a distinct program, separate from HUD.

(In which case I have been on welfare a good part of my life. The government paid for my education from grades 1-8, and paid for part of my undergraduate and graduate education.)
