The reason for the season

$20 says the majority of atheists take Dec 25th off work.

$20 says skinheads take January 19th off, too. And British workers in the US take July 4th off, and Native Americans take October 12th off. Hell, I'm a vegetarian, and I took Thanksgiving off - even sitting at the dinner table right next to my turkey-eating cousins.

Oh, the hypocrisy! Also, the office is locked up pretty tight on those days, and they didn't give me a key.

All are sinners. Jesus is not about morality, there is only one who is good, he is about LOVE, thats what I believe is the true reason for the season. Love suffers to be known, and joy springs through that suffering. There is a beautiful spirit behind all the "nonsense" at this time of year, I say enjoy it as much as you can. Sorry, couldnt resist! Merry Christmas everyone!!!

You can't say Merry Christmas. It's offensive. You're supposed to say happy holidays.... because the holidays just evolved out of nowhere. $20 says the majority of atheists take Dec 25th off work.

No, the holidays evolved out of Saturnalia. The tradition of bringing trees indoors is a winter solstice celebration of pagan Germanic origin.

I find it funny - and a little odd - that the athiests know more about religious holidays than many of the believers do.

I had a deep, abiding faith that you would say that. ;)

Maybe it has something to do with valuing facts over dogma.

Another way to say it might be that some atheists actually take time to research matters, rather than just taking other peoples' word for it. I wonder how many Christians have actually read the Bible all the way through?

The documentation of the takeover of Saturnalia by the Christmasites is rather more reliable than the Bible stories.

Most bible scholars will tell you that Jesus wasn't even born in the winter time, more likely in the spring.

Here's a long article from the Catholic Encyclopedia on the history of Christmas celebrations;

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03724b.htm

Basically, the early Christians didn't even celebrate Christ's birth.

Very, very few. I can't count the number of times I've been talking to someone who has been quoting the bible at me, only to say "the Bible doesn't say THAT!" when I provide them with another quote. Julia Sweeney talks about this in one of her talks on God; she said she was pretty shocked when she learned what was _really_ in the Bible.

(Fun challenge of the day - find the New Testament quote that indicates that heterosexual men will NOT be among the ones to stand with Jesus during the last days.)

The Bible also speaks out about male bisexuality (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13), so what conclusions are we to draw? :o

That the authors of Leviticus were probably Republicans.

You make your historical comments like they have some significance. Who is not aware of the historical evolution of December 25th from its original celebration of Mithras and other pagan rituals to it present day celebration of the Birth of Christ. As mentioned earlier, for the first 313 years
after the birth of Christ, Christmas was not even observed. In our culture it is merely a day picked by the Roman Emperor Constantine to show respect for Jesus Christ. You can observe it by doing the bah humbug chant or by reflecting on the Glory of God.

Sorry, but facts are facts regardless of what the Christians think. The origin of the winter festival is NOT Christian.

There are some scholars who believe that Jesus Christ of Nazareth was born around the end of October. That would shed new meaning to the evolution of Halloween.

In the runup to Christmas, you hear some Christians complaining about the so-called war on Christmas or how it's so commercial, or whatever.

My response is "so what?" If OTHER people want to make THEIR Christmas all about consumerism, that's THEIR business!

YOU don't have to participate! Quitcher bitching & just do your own thing & ignore the whining PC atheists and/or the commercialism.

>You misread the Scripture.

Leviticus 20:13 "If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."

Revelation 14:3-5 "They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no deceit, for they are without fault before the throne of God."

I'd love to see the "correct" interpretation of those.

Leviticus 20:13 (New American Standard Bible)

13'(A)If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

The NAS seems to compare one to many. Therefore, both males have committed an abomination.

In regard to Rev 14:3-5, I'm not clear on your point. This Scripture refers to the 12,000 from each of the 12 Tribes of Israel. The prophecy indicates they will be virgins, Ergo, no sexual experience. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is their first and only love. It is a spiritually committed relationship and therefore not physical. That is how I read it.
