With that in mind i think it is safe to say I have friends who have killed in combat but i will never know they did. In an article a read years ago by Massad Ayoob, he had data indicating that in ~12/13 incidents where a gun is drawn, the attacker backed off w/o a shot being fired. I know two personal acquaintances who stopped an attack just by showing a gun.
