Whale Wars Heats UP!

there are fish that I consider sentient as well. For instance Manta Rays.

Just manta rays? Not other rays? I clarified my original question to include any/all living things. Given your original specific example, I was attempting to distinguish whether or not only whales were on your radar. As mentioned previously, it does seem whales garner more sympathy for their plight than others. I am happy there is sympathy at all, but I am trying to understand what makes one so sure about whales, and not-so-much about other animals.

Jeanne seems to think it's in the eyes.

It's not "in the eyes" it's in the brain, and perhaps the soul.

GAWD you are a boring man:ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

The eyes are the window to the soul

"A person's thoughts can be ascertained by looking in his or her eyes. The proverb has been traced back in English to 'Regiment of Life' (1545). But the proverb was known much earlier. Cicero (106-43 B.C.) is quoted as saying, 'Ut imago est animi voltus sic indices oculi' (The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter). The L*tin proverbs, 'Vultus est index animi' or 'Oculus animi index,' are usually translated as 'The face is the index of the mind.' The French say, 'Les yeux sont le miroir de l'dme (The eyes are the mirror of the soul). 'The eyes are the window of the soul' is a variant form of the proverb..." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996).

My question regarding "likelihood of sentience" as your reason for opposition of the harvesting of whales is to understand what basis you are using to define sentience--specifically, whether it is just a "feeling" you have or whether it is rooted on what seems likely via scientific study.

You strike me as the kind of guy who has been to the bar and noshed on fried calamari.

What's the matter with fried calamari? It's yummy!

Incidents involving the Japanese, a different topic for discussion, but does anyone else think the crews of the Steve Irwin and Bob Barker are lucky to not have had a serious mishap all on their own? I mean, at times, there seems to be a serious lack of seamanship and leadership on their part? Oh well, I suppose anything really bad does go wrong, they'll just have themselves a martyr, no?

And HOW MUCH lube oil does the Bob Barker burn every day!!?? :S

Conservation organisation’s flagship impounded in Shetland

The flagship of an international conservation group faces being impounded or sold after a lawsuit was brought against them while they were in Shetland.

Sea Shepherd’s boat, the Steve Irwin, was in Lerwick on its way to the Faeroes where it was planning to disrupt an annual whale hunt that sees around 1000 of the animals killed.

A Malta-based fishing company, Fish and Fish Limited, has taken legal action against Sea Shepherd. The action is in relation to damage they allege was done to bluefin tuna fishing gear by Sea Shepherd in the Mediterranean last year.

The organisation says it now must raise a bond of almost $1.5m or the ship will be held indefinitely and possibly sold. They are now calling on supporters to raise the funds that will allow them to take to the sea again.

The founder of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, was at the helm of their ship during its visit to Shetland. He said: “The Steve Irwin was detained in the Scottish Shetland Islands by the British courts due to a civil lawsuit brought against us by Maltese fishing company, Fish and Fish Limited. They are claiming damages for the bluefin tuna we rescued from their nets in June 2010, fish that we believe were illegally caught after the season has closed, without an inspector onboard, or any paperwork documenting the legality of their catch.

“We have a legal firm representing us, and believe we have the necessary evidence to support our case. This lawsuit will also give us the opportunity to expose what we allege to be illegal activities by Fish and Fish and we will be aggressively defending the case on this basis.”

With the ship being detained and with its future uncertain, the organisation faces difficulty in continuing its work.

Paul Watson said: “It could prevent us from reaching the Faeroe Islands to protect pilot whales and threaten our ability to defend whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary from the Japanese whaling fleet this December.”

The Steve Irwin was in Lerwick on its way to the Faeroe Isles to take action against the annual slaughter of pilot whales. The crew were planning to use “aggressive non-violence” to disrupt the killings and was to be accompanied by a second vessel from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.

The ships were planning to use underwater acoustic devices positioned between the migrating whales and the islands to steer them away from the fishermen.

Sea Shepherd describes itself as “an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization.”

They say “Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.”

“Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.

“By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.”

The boat at the centre of the legal row was named after the Australian conservationist who died in 2006. It is used by the organisation in their direct action campaigns against whaling. Previous to it being used by Sea Shepherd it served as a fisheries protection vessel in Scotland.

It featured in a reality TV show Whale Wars, where the ship and its crew attempted to disrupt Japanese ships engaged in hunting whales.

If the lawsuit is just frivolous then what is happening is bs

If they really did destroy property they need to be held accountable

Those morons attempt to destroy very expensive property on camera every time the foul a prop or try some other bullshit.

I am suprised there hasn't been Japaneese lawsuits with similar results.

Would it really suprise you if they damadged fishing gear. They operate under the premise that two wrongs make a right. If you are fishing illegally, or I think you are filling illegally, then my illegal act of distruction of property is justified and excused.

They are just as bad as all the different religious terrorists. Line them up and shoot the dirty hippies for being pirates!

Dude, I agree with you

But that does not change what I said

Bs lawsuits are just that
Does not matter who files them

I have watched some of the shows just to see what is going on

My guess is, this law suit is on targer
