Want to check your rig? Pack it with a gun for safety!

Apparently the safest way to check valuables on a US flight is to include a gun. I love unintended consequences. Now I'm thinking of purchasing a gun so I can start checking my rig when I fly.

Sounds like an ad run by starter pistol manufacturers :)

My guess is that thieves would have no issues as long as they do not steal the gun :)

Why not buy a real gun? It has the added benefit of helping you defend yourself and your loved ones. ;)

Not a worry - george says a fake pistol will work just as well as a real one, based on his exhaustive research.

We flew on a trip back in June. I took a pistol. I didn't take one of my favorites, but a much less expensive baby Glock, worried that someone in the baggage chain would steal it. My experience was very positive. Locked in a small Pelican case, which was locked in my suitcase, which was declared on check in and given to the attendant. My suitcase wasn't even searched, it seemed like the airline folks treated the case like it had some sort of bird-swine flu hybrid.:D

Oh, please...it's checked baggage, not carry-on.

You do know that guns have to be in CHECKED luggage right?

You do know that it is next to impossible to get to checked bags in flight...right?

You do know that you are supposed to show the weapon to the gate agent and show the weapon is clear... right?

I am betting you knew none of this.

Further, I bet you didn't even read the article... For if you had:

Quote

But once you add a gun -- even a starter pistol -- to your luggage, it gets extra-locked, gains new tracking privileges, and is subject to heightened scrutiny all the way to your destination.

This story is brilliant. If what is being said is true, then it makes sense to pack a gun with your checked in rig.

Too bad I can not carry firearms across the borders (since I am back in Canada and if I fly with my rig I am flying to the USA). One of my biggest fears these days is losing my rig to the airlines which we all know can cost each one of us thousands and thousands of dollars. If the airlines are adding extra tracking to checked in luggage with firearms this is a win-win scenario for everyone who fears losing their rig.

I think the inference here was that the bag not being searched, even though checked in, is not a good thing. Bombs etc. don't necessarily need to be hand detonated.

That said I am 99.9% sure that all luggage is screened/X-rayed prior to boarding anyway.

After the sixth or seventh flight, I'd be worried that I was too rushed at the ticket counter, and forget to declare the gun. I can only imagine what would happen if you checked a gun, while forgetting to declare it :S

Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
