Anyone watching the Brown/Coakley race?

Recommended Posts

This already semi-dated article in the San Francisco Chronicle sums things up pretty squarely:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2010/01/19/MNU81BJRM1.DTL

I particularly like this paragraph:

Quote

For Boxer, a favorite Republican target, a GOP win in Massachusetts would be a particularly dark sign representing "not just the canary in the coal mine," said Wade Randlett, a leading Silicon Valley fundraiser for Obama. "It's the flock of dead ravens landing on the lawn."

:D:D

The overall tone of the article is fairly even though. It is not a full blown referendum (yet) for the mid-terms. Sen. Boxer isn't out of the running yet, and I suspect she'll be a viable contender in November. Speaker Pelosi is certainly not at any real risk.

SF Mayor Gavin Newsom get's it though.
Quote

"This is real," he said. "At our own peril, we dismiss these tea parties as ... some sort of isolated extremism. ... It's not."

I think the left will attempt to shore things up and moderate the agenda. If the economy turns around reliably, November will not be a cake-walk for conservatives or the "Tea Party" movement, but the damage is essentially done. However, if things languish, or if somehow the democrats manage to not see the blood in the water in the wake of Virginia, New Jersey, and last night...then ravens are going to wind up on the endangered species list.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I believe its up for re-election in 2012.

I heard via the news it was this year

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/01/19/politics/main6117658.shtml

"Brown will finish Kennedy's unexpired term, facing re-election in 2012. "

thanks
I didnt know for sure

if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

7 points? What kind of voodoo math are you doing?

While some people call a 5 point victory a landslide, most don't.

But is it significant in the context of how Mass citizens are voting?

what was the normal margin of win for Kennedy in the last couple elections vs this - how much did the sentiment change? how big was the swing from previous expectations

maybe we don't use the word "landslide" that's for presidential elections when one guy takes 49 of 50 states......

but "landslide" does reflect the sentiment of Massachusetts (sp)-for-gosh-sakes-so freakin-left-of-a-state voting in a guy like this

you have to forgive them for not using the correct term, I mean, clearly they are fundamentalist wackos and you have to compensate for the IQ delta

> This still wasn't a landslide....

I think it was a landslide. Coakley was polling a 20 point lead several weeks ago and lost by a 5 point spread.

Having a majority of Independents, and about 20 percent of the Democratic vote crossing over is a landslide event.

I wouldn't use the word landslide - but it was a HUGE swing and the dems would be foolish to not take this as a big message about their spending agenda.

It's the kind of math when you subtract 46 from 53, which was the count at the time we were having this discussion. It may continue to move until the absentee ballots are counted.

Coakley didn't even win Kennedy's hometown - that's why it's a landslide, though I'll grant that 5 isn't the same as 7. (The normal definition would be 10+ points)

I see you have no actual substance on the matter of your unsuitable Palin reference.

since Obama won by 26 and brown won by 5 that would be a 31 point swing, I would call that a landslide

I was unaware Obama was running for the Senate seat in Mass.

How long do you give the GOP piranas to attack en masse with the first thing he as a moderate does like Sen Snowe? He is a northeastern kind of republican and not a PURE republican as defined by the far right wing of the Tea Bagging Party of NO.

One of the rebuliclowns here has already described him as a "progressive light":S:S

The truth is, it doesn't have to be him.

Previously Lieberman was thought of as the big swing and now Brown is in there too. It's entirely possible they try to knock each other over on the way to the feeding trough of being counted as #60 on the side of health care. It certainly lowers Lieberman's position so he may be slightly more willing to deal. Brown has already stated he wants a health care bill passed and is more interested in what's in it for Mass. than the party.

But he did make that late run to the state linking the race to his agenda-which is more than Palin did yet you drag her name in to it.

If I were to say that Coakley met her Waterloo would that have meant she flew to the city of Waterloo and shook its hand?

Nope, but it would only be slightly more inaccurate that your newly stated position was strictly a race based on local issues.
The truth is that a lot of people who aren't right wing wackos aren't comfortable marching lock step into the collective-and we tend to vote in EVERY election.

Nope. Never said that, in fact, didn't even try to imply that. What I WAS trying to imply was that his motivations might not actually be the same as what some people are so fired up about.

Never had my butt hurt, how does it feel? I never said he was conservative enough for me. I did think he was better than Coakley. He is most likely a damn Yankee republican. Not who I would be looking for to run down here, but can't expect much better politicians from Yankee land;)

Back that up. Do a search and find my disparaging remarks about a region and its people to prove your point. I'm comfortable with whatever you actually find.

Go for it.
