Guns being destroyed for a better future

Recommended Posts

seems like a poor description. The problem wasn't that this Northern Ireland group had guns. The problem was that they wanted to use them and other forms of violence. After decades of fighting and short lived lulls, it seems to be quite settled now, which is definitely worth celebrating.

Or is there still some simmering discord? Seems like any IRA type matters have been pushed aside in the media by the more current conflicts with the middle east.

even more guns have been decomissioned.

There are places in the world where there could be a steady stream of guns being decommissioned for 50 years and there'd still always be plenty of guns. Sort of the "two-ledger" system of materiel. Is N. Ireland one of those places?

Yes and there always will be. In fact there has been some escalation in the last couple of years. Disident republicans have murdered soldiers, policemen and civilians in the last couple of years and several large bomb plots ahve been stopped, several smaller bombs have gone off some with lethal consequences.

Not really, firarms are controled over here and have been for a long time. That said, I have no doubt that should a signifcant terrorist group want to get them in to the country they would have a large amount of sucess. The smuggling problem in to the Republic of Ireland is a big one and their is little cahnce of being caught unless its an intelligence led operation.

You and I are really making 2 different points. You're saying that - in the future - if militants want to get guns into the country, they'll be able to do so. My point is that with all the decommissioning of guns in N. Ireland, there are, and will still be, plenty stashed away for a rainy day.

I guess that depends on how well a certain Canuck did his job.
