A bunch of waspy old farts have got their panties all in a bunch because the Canadian women know how to celebrate. This is HOCKEY! You don't celebrate a gold medal by sipping tea.

The Olympics are not some street game. Hell, even NBA/NFL players have parameters. I think their celebration could be considered grandstanding, altho I don't think they meant it that way. Olympics, like college sports are different that pro sports, I think it was inappropriate, altho I'm not offended, it's just not the venue. The superbowl shuffle was brash, but that was a private enterprise, the gold medal shuffle was part of a world government enterprise; not cool.

The IOC need to get over themselves. First they kick that one kid out because he took a picture with some girl kissing his medal at crotch level (and threatened to fine him I think? how much are they paying Olympians these days?) and now this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Stanley Cup winners routinely get drunk drinking from the Stanley Cup? I don't see how this is worse than that and I kinda think some of the reaction is probably sexist reaction to seeing girls act improperly (aka, acting like the boys do).

If the arena was full of people I would agree. But it was empty except for the team, coaches, and a few photographers who would have photographed their celebration regardless of where it was held.

The IOC needs a clean sweep of personnel, especially at the top. What's the point of winning if you can't be happy about it...especially in a custom that is accepted in your own country...in your own county...:S:S

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

The negative response to their celebration is a crock of shite. We would not even be talking about this story if some media whore from the AP did not whine to the IOC. This AP reporter and the IOC obviously have no idea what it's like to blow off a little steam after dedicate your life to a goal for several years and then seeing your dreams come true.

PS: if the shoe was on the other foot and it was the American girls and not the Canadian girls doing the celebrating, I would be saying the same thing. Shite I tell you, nothing by AP + IOC shite.

It seems one of the girls was underage (19 is the age of majority in BC). Folks around there take underage smoking very seriously; drinking too (sort of).

Yeah, because no one drinks underage anywhere except the US right? :P BC will survive...I'm sure of it.

Seriously, if local BC authorities want to take issue with it, they can address it through back channels rather than letting the press fan the flames of a controversy that isn't there.

When a set of conditions arise where all that's left to whine about is possibly one underage person celebrating a victory as part of a team that brought glory to your home country, in a manner that is common, then there is no problem. I for one, stand with the team, and hope they make no apologies.

These women are Olympic champions in one of the roughest team sports around. I pity the fool that tries tell any of them they are too young to drink. B|
Set the woods on fire, girls! You earned it!

The team trains next door in Alberta. There the drinking age is 18. I am only speculating but it is entirely possible that this 18 year old girl was not aware that the drinking age is 19 in BC. But it's not like they were getting drunk at the local watering hole. They were in their own domain, still in their uniforms on the ice celebrating. BTW IOC it is called being "on the ice" not being "on the playing field".

I doubt you will see the local BC police pursuing anything here. This is after all Vancouver BC home of Hastings and Main where the real world "Dawn of the Dead" zombies roam the streets. This is just the IOC taking exception to a bunch of young women who were not acting enough "lady like" to their liking.

To add to this, I hear she's from Quebec, where she was legal to drink at 18, so it is understandable if not actually legal.

If the girls were stomping on flags or tipping Zambonis over, there would be a problem. But otherwise it is humourous that the IOC have their panties in a bunch.

IIRC, the Olympics are supposed to be about sportsmanship on the grandest stage of all, at least in the eyes of the IOC.

I would have preferred that the Olympic Games stuck to their Amateur-only rule, but the Communist-bloc countries wouldn't play fair, so we have the system as it is now, and it's hardly scandal-free.

If the arena was already empty of fans and opposing players, then I guess the girls did the right thing waiting until then to celebrate, but it would still have been better for them to go back to their hotel or athletic village where they're staying and celebrate in privacy.

With all due respect I am guessing you do not have much of a hockey background. It is on the ice where you want to be as you celebrate your championship. The hockey player has a certain bond to this environment. It is their shrine. Sure hockey players celebrate back in the village or other public areas. But only after they have first paid homage to the Hockey Gods on the ice. Heck they didn't even want to get out of their stinky uniforms until the moment had completely set in.

Or maybe I am just talking out of my rear end ...

They're celebrating at the scene of the victory. This is routine in pro sports.

and while I'm sure the men will say they like playing for their country, I think most will say the Stanley Cup is a bigger deal. The male pros in hockey, as well as tennis, basketball, soccer...the Olympics is not the biggest event. For many of the women's teams, it is, and the winners are going to feel pretty good.

These athletes should not, in my opinion, be sanctioned or punished for their celebration. I played hockey for over 30 years (in local recreational leagues), and I can say with certainty that the nature of that celebration was not unusual. It would have been smarter, however, to keep that party in the locker room, away from the cameras if possible. I am very surprised the coaches and Canadian Olympic officials let this happen. Now, the attention has moved from the accomplishment of winning the gold medal to a controversy over the celebration. That is a shame, and it was preventable by keeping it in the locker room. Just to repeat so I don't offend our Canadian friends -- I have played the game, and I have had parties like that after big wins. I have no problem with the celebration. But on the Olympic stage, that party needed to stay in the locker room.

I hear ya. I would be celebrating on the ice too if I was one of them. I'm just saying they could have celebrated without the vices, as it's the Olympics, and not a pro championship.

When the olympics let pros in, sportsmanship went to hell in a handbasket. Every year when a pro championship is won, be it MLB, NHL, NBA or NFL, the players are shown on TV in the locker rooms pouring champagne and beer on each other. I have no problem with that.

Hell, college sports had some of this too. The winner of the annual game between hated rivals Alabama and Tennessee in football had the winners celebrating with cigars in the locker room. That tradition ended a decade or so ago.

I'm just saying its the Olympics... that's all.

Good for them, they were having celebratory beverages in a responsible manner. I didn't see pictures of anyone shotgunning, keg standing, or vomiting on the ice - just drinking like civilized humans. There isn't anything morally wrong with responsible drinking.

I guess it is a good thing skydiving is not an Olympic sport.
Imagine what the IOC would do once the beer light comes on. B|

Word. My first thought was that these girls belong at a dropzone...good on them for relishing the moment. Hooray for the ladies from Canada.

Shell666 is probably wondering why the fuck they didn't invite her. :D
