Pot grower barred from buying guns

A medical-marijuana activist... has been barred from buying guns because he's a pot patient, according to an e-mail sent Tuesday by authorities.

The e-mail from the King County Sheriff's Office to Steve Sarich said paperwork authorizing him to use and grow marijuana for medical reasons was enough to deny him the possession of weapons.

Sarich, 59, said he tried to buy a shotgun and a pistol... He said he has no criminal record but failed the background check because federal laws prohibit "unlawful users" of controlled substances from buying or receiving guns.

Marijuana is illegal under federal law...

Using and growing marijuana does not make someone a drug addict. (Like brewing and drinking beer does not make someone an alcoholic.)

I do somewhat agree that since it is still illegal under federal law that maybe it makes sense to not allow them to own guns. I guess if they want to own guns, they'd be better off buying their drugs on the street rather than being a registered medical marijuana patient. But since I disagree so much with marijuana being illegal, I think that barring marijuana users from owning guns is like barring alcohol users from owning guns. (Hey, that would be one way to greatly reduce the number of people who own guns! )

Let me see if I understand your view on this:
1) All people who smoke marijuana are dangerous criminals who shouldn't own a gun,
2) A person who legally obtained a permit to grow and use medicinal use marijuana should be denied gun ownership because they...obeyed the law and got thier permit legally...

This type of generalization is about as good as saying all Repulicans are closet homosexuals that incite violence and that all Democrats are so leftist that they truely are communists that want the government to take care of everything...as you said, BRILLIANT!

You should be able to own a gun if you use the drug (alcohol or weed) legally but if you are under the influence and use the gun then your ass belongs to the judge. If you are under the influence and hurt somebody with that gun, then the judge can transfer possession of your ass to a guy named Bubba who you will share a cell with for the next 5-15 years.

Sitting here at the gun range w/ friends. Good bottle of bourbon and the good smoke. Everybody just chillin and teaching the kids to shoot. Nobody shot in the foot.

Ahh, Ok....I see where you're from. It makes sense now.

I've been to Germany and had a blast. Had some of the best beer ever made, Paulaner is great! I also noticed a lot of Germans like to drink. Should they be allowed to own guns? Guns in general....shotguns included.
