I think it's actually more than that. But let me ask you the question that is the converse - if we had everyone in the US pay their "fair share" how long do you think THAT would last?

To answer your question directly, I think it could go on indefinitely, because it's working now. It could probably return to pre-Reagan tax levels without destroying the economy - although that's not a good idea overall.

Speaking for myself - forever. I am OK with supporting the highways I drive on and the airspace I use. I am also OK paying more than "my share" - because the couple with two kids making $20,000 a year can't afford to pay as much as I can. And I'd rather give them a tax break than throw them in jail.

Until the "rich" renounce their US citizenship (America is unique in our taxation of citizens' income regardless of where they reside) and move elsewhere with lower effective tax rates.

That can't happen until our tax rates increase enough since they're currently relatively low even though our tax system is the first (share of taxes paid by the top earning decile) or second (ratio of tax percentage to income percentage in the top decile) most progressive out of the OECD 20.

When the top 1% owns 42.2% of the financial wealth of the USA, the top 20% owns 93% of the wealth of the USA, leaving the remaining 80% with just 7% of the financial wealth (2007 data) it seems to me that the "rich" are getting off pretty lightly.

While other country's citizens can move to avoid taxes, America is unique in taxing its citizens regardless of where they live.

When you move to a foreign country you still need to pay US taxes on everything you earn over the exclusion limit of $91,500 plus the housing deduction capped at $27,240.

Avoiding that requires becoming a non-citizen.

Pretty close if you add the stats for each category up.

~13% poor
~1% homeless
~9% unemployed
~18% disabled

That's 41%. Surely some of them overlap so it's probably closer to 25% for people in one or more of those groups.

According to St. Ron Paul (R, but really Libertarian) (10/18/2009) the bottom 40% of the US population has 0.2% of all US wealth. So the "poor" part is right there.
