masterblaster72 0 #152 July 2, 2010 WOW what a sick finish to Uruguay - Ghana. Suarez made a brilliant move by saving what would have been a death knell by saving the goal with his hand and getting himself expelled at the last second of extra time. Uruguay - Netherlands in semifinal... Viva el futbol! Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. masterblaster72 0 #154 July 2, 2010 Quote Quote Suarez made a brilliant move Really???? You call that brilliant????? Of course -- aside from the fact that it cost him an expulsion, he kept Uruguay in the game. He wasn't going to save it with his head, so the last resort was to stick up his hand. Not doing so would have cost Uruguay the game. Instead, they're in the semifinal, albeit that Suarez won't play. What do you think of this? Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

masterblaster72 0 #156 July 3, 2010 Quote Same level of cheating, along with maradona's... That's what I think of it. Henry got away with his hand and qualified your team for this tournament. Maradona got away with the same in 1986, and then he pulled this stroke of genius out of the hat to win it. Suarez didn't get away with his defending hand and got expelled. NOT the same level of cheating. The rules in this sport dictate that if you block a goal with your hand and you're not a goalie, you're out of the game and the other team gets a penalty shot. He did what pretty much ANY player in this world cup would do. And if this block were done by a team you rooted for, I'm sure the complaining would have been conspicuously absent. Quote Looks like you have different standards.... Completely unsportsmanlike, and not brilliant at all. Ah, so you're just interested in taking jabs at me rather than objectively talking game, which I've tried with you. Still sore about 2006 eh. At least Frenchy's got more class than that. Completely unsportsmanlike, and not brilliant at all. For us NFL fans, it's tackling a guy in the end zone to prevent a sure TD. You take the penalty. It's pretty much like a penalty kick - the ball is put on the 2 yard line. In college it's only 15 yards, so you certainly commit it. Not classy, but you're there to win. Enjoy your celebrations this evening. We surely will do Just keep in mind, this very young team only works together since about 7 weeks, a bunch of youngsters - and Mueller sorely will be missed on Wednesday There is public viewing in Konstanz? And you're sure it will be Spain? Hopefully, it will not be too hot: Today, in my home town it was about 34°, then suddenly a rain/thunderstorm came over us like the Niagara falls, and now it's around 26°, perfect. Most part of Germany is still boiling hot, and fans are still in the streets, there were millions on public viewing spots. Holy Cow, that was a match to remember: Team spirit, power and absolute fitness of these kids, every single one keeping track of the match. That was just great and shows what soccer is about. Meso 38 #168 July 5, 2010 What he did wasn't brilliant, nor skilful. It was 100% pure cheating. Just the same way as smashing the best player on the other team' face in would get you banned but you'd have the advantage of having the best player off the field. Quite frankly though should be a change in regulation over those actions, which should result in a lengthy ban. Look at it from a logical perspective, if a ball gets kicked into your arm and it isn't even deliberate, a penalty will be given. He stuck out both his hands and punched it out, that's definitely not the same. When one supports cheating to win, that sure doesn't say much for ones personality. So because other players cheated in the past it's okay for everyone to cheat? Acts like that ruin the entire game. So by you supporting his actions and making them out to be some hero-like act, you'd have no problem with ruining the game of football... That's great. If everyone was as much of a complete douche as Suarez, every game there would just be a line of defenders on the goal line with their hands up. Luckily most players at least retain some class and love for the game, and not a pathetic ideal of cheating to win. Doesn't really matter since they're going to be crushed by the Dutch. mircan 0 #169 July 5, 2010 It seems that on this Cup there were more instances of playing with hands than ever before. And in critical situations too. It looks like the game needs name change to semi-football or handyfootball or something. dudeist skydiver #

Just the same way as smashing the best player on the other team' face in would get you banned but you'd have the advantage of having the best player off the field. Well, smashing someone's face in doesn't always have consequences (example). Nor did anyone get physically hurt here. Most importantly of all, Uruguay paid the consequences and did not get away with this violation of the rules. The rules of the game were enforced accordingly. QuoteQuite frankly though should be a change in regulation over those actions In every world cup I've heard this, not only on this board but on other boards I post to. These are pretty much always the words of a person who is responding to a result that doesn't suit him/her. QuoteLook at it from a logical perspective, if a ball gets kicked into your arm and it isn't even deliberate, a penalty will be given. That is not always the case. It is left to the discretion of the referee. I've seen unintentional handballs in the box even in this world cup where the penalty wasn't awarded. QuoteHe stuck out both his hands and punched it out, that's definitely not the same. Yup, he did it deliberately no question about it. The other Uruguayan player next to Suarez was also doing the same. It was a last-gasp attempt to keep themselves in the game. QuoteWhen one supports cheating to win, that sure doesn't say much for ones personality. I don't support cheating. Unfortunately EVERY team does it in some form or other. It really detracts from the game, I agree. You can make whatever judgments you want about my personality; I don't really care since we don't know each other. QuoteSo because other players cheated in the past it's okay for everyone to cheat? Of course not. But one thing I notice -- complaints about cheating come most often from those who don't like it being done to the team they're rooting for. However, when the team that person is rooting for does it, those same people remain silent. QuoteActs like that ruin the entire game. So by you supporting his actions and making them out to be some hero-like act, you'd have no problem with ruining the game of football... That's great. I can tell you had a lot of emotion invested in this game to tell me something that absurd. I was happy to see either team go through. I would have said the same had Ghana pulled this trick on Uruguay. It would have been nice to see an African team finally make the semis, but unfortunately Ghana didn't put the PK away in the 120th minute. QuoteIf everyone was as much of a complete douche as Suarez, every game there would just be a line of defenders on the goal line with their hands up. No there would not, because the cost is too great -- no team wants to lose a man when it's not absolutely necessary. But in the 120th minute of extra time, most players with some wit would do what Suarez did when faced with certain loss if the ball goes in the goal. In that sense I suppose most players are douches in your book. QuoteLuckily most players at least retain some class and love for the game, and not a pathetic ideal of cheating to win. I disagree with that -- Robben for example is a fine player but he's diving to no end in this tournament, even more than he did in the 2006 WC. Like someone above said -- these teams are there to win and a lot of players compromise their integrity to do so. Sure, it was cheap. I agree with that. It went against the rules. But the rules dictate that the other team gets a penalty shot and the player that commits the foul leaves the field. Uruguay paid the price. All Ghana had to do was put it away...but instead Uruguay's gamble to keep their hopes alive paid off. That's why I think it was a brilliant move...though I wouldn't want to see a game won in this fashion again, and I probably won't. QuoteDoesn't really matter since they're going to be crushed by the Dutch. Agreed -- Uruguay has had an easy path to the semis and has not faced a team with the momentum, confidence and talent that Holland has. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
