The World Cup in South Africa

Recommended Posts

What no extra time? The game ends in a 1-1 tie? That sucks ass.

Shit where's my sister? Time to go kiss her? :S

BTW. ... good game South Africa. You came so close to winning it at the end there (on more than one occasion) and I think you may have just spoiled Mexico's chances of advancing.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

This group is so even I predict all four teams go into the last match day with a chance to advance. I don't believe any of these teams are good enough to dominate the group. One tie is not going to spoil anybody's chances of advancing.

I do believe it is the tournament's "Group of Death" and this first match solidified this label. :o

Na... Group D is the group of death in my opinion, with G not far behind...

Why do we not see anyone here denouncing and screaming about racism and boycotting these games like they do in Arizona because of racism?

Why do you insist on posting your normal racist drivel in a thread about one of the greatest sporting events in the world?

Fun w/o fight seems to be unknown territory for some folks. They need to slam down permanently.

(Having a look back on threads in SC posted during the last weeks/months, makes me sick. Racist, dumb and aggressive posts all day long. [:/] Posted by Americans, mainly bashing their own prez and country. Disgusting.)

Next week, I'll take my flight to KMIA, staying at Hazyview for some days ... My Saffie and I will enjoy the special atmosphere around, no matter where it will be. Perhaps, there'll be a small chance to still snatch some tickets for a match, no matter which one it might be :$ That would be THE highlight ....

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Good to hear! I can tell you that we have not had this kind of atmosphere since the first democratic elections in '94. I have shed quite a few tears and swallowed a few lumps in the throat tonight.

To Frenchie and Rem ---- some work to do still tonight - 0-0 at half time!

Wendy, as I said up-thread, my money is also on Brazil. A Spain-Brazil final will be the cherry on top.

If any of you are actually watching - what do the overwhelming buzz of the Vuvuzelas do for you?

That noise unfortunately is just like big bee buzzing somewhere in the background, over TV not that impressive. In original, it must be 100 dB or what?? :)

In 2006, here in Germany we had an overwhelming atmosphere - even we did not win, that didn't count.

I had the big luck of beeing in the stadium which is just 1 km from my home (in Cologne), watching the match Togo-France. THAT was noise, I tell you! Some of the Togo-guys later on were in our local, they made music, were singing, dancing - a blast!

Today, it's just the same: Cars, windows, gardens etc. are decorated with flags, people making a lot of noise, music, and it's just like in Summer 2006: great.

I really hope we will have chances in SA, somewhere, no matter which match - just to participate!

I'll let you know :)

So a letter to a gerenral public cancelled all racism and hypocricy there?:o

Sweet.:|

I don't believe it though.:|

here's a little snippet of the interview with Prof. Alfred Tokollo Moleah,
South African Ambassador to Vienna (2006)

And if you go into the suburbs of Johannesburg or Cape Town or
wherever, you find that they are still highly segregated and it is the
exceptional African who is living in those suburbs. It is people like myself
and a few others who have managed to overcome Apartheid through a
variety of means. In my particular case I went to school. Then I left South
Africa and went to more school and lived in America for quite some time.
I then went back to South Africa and was able to deal at the level at which I
am dealing. But for the ordinary African life is still very much segregated,
townships are still there and the white areas are still white areas.

Then again there is always this:

You could choke on the irony. The right to protest was one of the major victories after the overthrow of apartheid. The idea that these rights are now being suspended in the name of “showing South Africa…in a positive light” is reality writ by Orwell.

Where is the outrage and boycotts? Where is the UN stepping in to try to adjust and modify laws?

Where is all the rage that is usually pointed at the US?

Why don't you just get on a plane and go and find out for yourself? As a 'darkie' Brit myself who has lived in South Africa, I can honestly say that I found London and the USA to be more racist than Jo'burg. I love south Africa and enjoy going back often (I was in Jo'bur only two weeks ago). Stop living in the past get on a plane and have the time of your life in the Rainbow Nation!

So damn far, as I said. You fly 10 hours to London, just to wait several hours and then fly even longer to Jo'Burg.

If I do get a hiking trip to Tanzania together for next year, I want to take advantage of the proximity and get to the tip and dive the Sardine Migration.

Oh, the irony - Henry claiming a handball!:P

Funny, that was the first comment of the post-game commentary here, and my thoughts exactly when I saw Henry waving his hand yelling for a call.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Sardine Migration.

We call it the Sardine Run.

As for diving it? You will never have seen so many baracudas and sharks in one place!B|

Sort of.

I've seen very large numbers of California (Pacific) baracuda at once, but they're not nearly as impressive as the larger Atlantic species.

And I've seen many dozens to hundreds of whitetips and scalloped hammerheads at a time in Costa Rica, but not quite the same as a bunch of ragged tooth (sand tiger) or bigger ones.

The catch is I don't know if I can sell the others on cold water diving in the middle of your winter.
