5 or 6 coils of razor sharp barbed wire, laid in rows. Can't be too expensive to make and lay out. It won't stop the flow of illegals but should staunch it pretty well. Plus, if any fucker succeeds in getting through it, they'll die soon after from the loss of blood.

No. That Grand Canyon thing is pretty awesome and the water that flows through it eventually finds its way to parts of Nevada and California. There are a couple of airports there I like too, but I'll admit the fuckwad towns around them could go.
I mean, sure, it was the LAST state of the contiguous United States to join and we still did pretty well without it before it joined.
I have a couple of friends that live there and I'd hate to see them actually be un-American rather than just sort of sound like it every once in awhile.

Sounds like it's not an illegal immigrant issue, then - more a "people who break into your house" issue.

The fence is only a small part of the problem of illegal immigration. Yes, it is highly valuable, and needs to be improved especially in densely populated areas (Nogales, etc).
The real problem is the way our system is setup to accept these people. Make green cards and social security cards impossible to forge, and allow employers to verify these documents with a computer during the hiring process. This alone would help a massive amount.
Other problems include:
SSA's stance of allowing fake SS numbers to pay taxes, and then turn around and collect social benefits (costing the US at least 35-40B annually, but we do collect about 10B in taxes)
US banks allowing foreign immigrant ID cards as the only ID required to open a bank account.
Sanctuary cities, and other policies that prohibit the questioning of one's legal status.

This implies that the majority of the jobs undocumented workers perform are at companies that would be willing to follow the rules to begin with. Here's a tip; they don't. They don't because it's within their financial interests not to. They don't pay taxes on those workers, benefits or in most cases as much as minimum wage.
It's not the documents that are at fault; it's the corrupt businesses that hire them.
The US gives lip service to going after companies that violate the law, but that's all they give and the companies know it too.

There's no way you're going to be able to restrict who can put money into a transnational bank account.
