shoulder dislocation in freefall

Big bummer for me, i was really begining to fall in love with this sport. Just thought i'd share my experience for the next guy who ends up searching 'dislocated shoulder' on the forum.

It'll still be here when you're done recovering. Good for you for being patient and getting everything fixed so that you don't end up with a significantly greater problem.

it's so worth it. i dislocated four times jumping (three times in freefall) before i had mine fixed thirteen months ago... and once i finished enough PT to jump again it felt totally great and very safe. if i ever dislocate again, it will probably be my OTHER shoulder... haha. ;)
life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

so how did you detemine that you were ready to jump again?

I'm rehabbing my shoulder from a bad break and this concern is pretty high on my list, at least once the fractures all bind up. If timing allows, I'd like to hit the tunnel first to validate the shouilder, but it's 450 miles away, and may not even be conclusive.

hey im just a student, but from my experience I was able to bring my arm to near-dislocation on the ground. tghrow it up, back & behind you (once youre rehabbed enough to do so of course) every wihich way & see if you are able to make it feel unstable in any way. I can usually feel mine 'falling' out before it actually dislocates.

YMMV

my left shoulder popped out while body-surfing (coming from a landlocked country..guess how much experience i had with that) this february. had to watch the brazilian boogie from the ground, three weeks later.. :(

i haven't jumped yet due to lack of opportunities but i feel pretty confident about it. the shoulder feels almost as did before it dislocated (was the first time). i didn't really think this could be a problem until i read the posts here. i guess i'll be careful on my next jump, then..

does it make sense to see a therapist six months after that happened?

im just trying to suck up as much knowledge about jumping as i can, even if i can't do it right now.

i just realized that even in my avatar picture from my tandem, I can see how i'm babying my left shoulder & not fully extending it...
