status of CC in Chicago?

Recommended Posts

I have to head to Chicago for a couple days, and will be spending at least part of my time in a neighborhood that a couple people have told me is less than savory. Am I correct in my guess that Illinois is not a reciprocity state, and my homegrown (Washington) CCP license wouldn't do me any good there?

Illinois doesn't even issue to it's own residents, they certainly don't recognize other states' licenses. They are literally the most restrictive state in the union. Only DC and Wisconsin are close in law, and a few "may issue" states are as bad in practice.

What neighborhood are you referring to & when will you be here. You have to have Chicago pizza, washed down with a good beer. B|

I will happily accompany you in the area of the marina if you're scared to go in alone and unarmed.

MT,ID,UT,AZ,SD,TX,MO,AR,LA,MS,TN,AK,NC,VA,VT, IN,OH, OK, KY

And since you're a resident of WA:

FL and MI

Thanks, but I've seen pictures of you and take little comfort in the offer. :P:D I'll likely survive a day or two there regardless of my weaponry; most people in that part of town do. However I'd certainly be more comfortable as an armed middle-aged white tourist than as an unarmed version of the same.

I survive jumps without an AAD all the time, but I generally prefer having one on, just in case. As jumps get scarier, my desire for an AAD increases, until I hit the breaking point at which I simply scratch off the load. Manifest just accepted my ticket...I ain't skeered enough to scratch yet! :D

I don't know the name of the neighborhood, it's somewhere south, near the water...googlemaps street view shows many fences. Pizza will be a requirement on the trip, and Kallend (ALF#3) owes me a beer or three already. :D

Meaning I walk by the eltracks on the south side every weekday.

The neighborhood livendive is going to is working class but not gang territory. I'd walk through it unarmed without concern.

Try Garfield / 55th area in the wee hours.

:D

University of Chicago, one of the top 10 schools in the USA? Say it ain't so. Drive there every Monday for my wife's chemo.

Anyhow, I doubt Dave is going to inspect his boat in the wee hours.

The key to staying safe in Chicago is NOT carrying a concealed weapon. It's being street smart and not going to gang territory in the wee hours. I expect the same is true of other big cities too.

True. Because crime never happens outside of gang territory, at any hour.

The decade of the 80's was from 1980 to 1989. 10 years. If you remove 1980 and 1989 you have 1981 to 1988. 8 years.

and you would support taking guns away from all law abiding citizens to prevent this from ever happening?

A non-sequitur on your part, but NO.
I have never suggested such a thing - with the exception that a mentally ill but law abiding citizen should not have a gun.

Some areas there are quite sketchy at times - as I'm sure you know.

As you said - I think being street smart has kept me alive in a lot of big cities - especially the questionable areas.
I've never had a problem - and I have been in some areas that would lead one to feel they are risking their life.

All of this reminds me of what some one told about Miami in the late '80s.

"Miami is much safer than it used to be. I was talking to a door gunner on a bread truck the other day and he said he hadn't had to open up in a week or two." :)

Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done.

Are guns the cause of Chicago's horrible crime rate?

The story of why they won't stop shooting in Chicago
This is the story of why they won’t stop shooting in Chicago.

It’s told by the wounded, the accused and the officers who were on the street during a weekend in April 2008 when 40 people were shot, seven fatally.

Two years later, the grim reality is this: Nearly all of the shooters from that weekend have escaped charges.

“You don’t go to jail for shooting people,” says Dontae Gamble, who took six bullets that weekend, only to see his alleged shooter walk free. “That’s why m------------- think they can get back on the streets and kill again. You feel me?”

So far, not one accused shooter has been convicted of pulling the trigger during those deadly 59 hours from April 18-20 of that year, a Chicago Sun-Times investigation has found.

Only one suspected triggerman — a convicted armed robber caught with the AK-47 he allegedly used to blow away his boss — is in jail awaiting trial...

Yeah, it's all those darned citizens with guns causing the problem. It's not the fault of the criminals, or the failure of the police and justice system. No, it's those darn armed homeowners!

Some of those dots on that shooting crime map are rather close to your walking beat, kallend.

Well, you are certainly correct - the criminals in question ARE overwhelmingly US citizens, and they undoubtedly have guns.

Doesn't affect my statement in any way. I drove through the neighborhood in question today and I'd do it again any day.

I'm surprised you can bring yourself to get out of bed in the morning, you might just fall in the shower, trip on the stairs, get hit by a bus...
