Cartoonist Molly Norris in hiding

Recommended Posts

Molly Norris has changed her name and gone into hiding after she had a "Draw Muhammad day". This is the kind of intolerance that is creating a huge backlash against the Muslim religion. Until this stops, there will be always be a large section of people that will lash out against Muslims. They are their own worst enemy.

It was an event to provoke radicals, what did she expect. Yes she has a right to draw whatever she wants just as the idiot drunk kid had to e-mail the POTUS with his thoughts on him (before anyone wastes time, we still don't actually know what he wrote) but actions have consequences, if you know what they will be when you do what you do then don't be suprised after the event. So if its sympathy shes looking for, she'll find it in the dictionary between shit and syphilis.

Another "see what you made them do" excuse .... how unsurprising.

No, of course she doesn't "deserve" threats; but Skyrad makes a reasonable point: unlike Rushdie, she was deliberately trying to provoke a predictable reaction. She did so as a planned tactic toward a goal. The reaction was well-anticipated, and her going underground was well pre-planned.

Now, she probably did so in the name of artistic freedom from religious intimidation and censorship - a laudable goal, IMO. And if, when she publicly re-surfaces (which she will), she admits that she was trying to provoke a reaction from parochial reactionaries so that they wind up looking like pricks by comparison, I'll gladly stand behind her. But if she claims to be "shocked, shocked" at the reaction her event caused, that will be intellectual dishonesty. We'll see.

We should show respect for these easily-offended muslims, because if we don't, well, they'll kill us. And anyone who doesn't give in to their death threats and do as they say, well, you're just a racist hater. So there!

Wind up looking like pricks to whom exactly, and is this image/audience combination something that is currently missing?

Let's enumerate the groups in play here...

1) Moderate (or also staunchly apologetic, I think the way I've broken these down it's okay to group them here) non-muslims living in the west
2) People distrustful of muslims in general living in the west
3) Moderate muslims living in the west
4) Radical / incitable muslims living in the west
5) Moderate (or apologetic) non-muslims living in [what I'll call] the muslim world
6) People distrustful of muslims in general living in the muslim world
7) Moderate muslims living in the muslim world
8) Radical / incitable muslims living in the muslim world

Hopefully avoiding for as long as possible an argument over the relative sizes of each of these groups, what messages do you guys think are missing and need to get through to which groups? Does Qur'an buring and cartoon publishing send any such missing message?

At the urging of the FBI, the Seattle cartoonist behind "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" is "going ghost" — leaving town, changing her name, creating a new identity because of the death threat issued in July by an Islamic cleric linked to the failed Times Square bombing, the Seattle Weekly says of its former contributor.

Seems like a fair trade. Your life in exchange for a cartoon drawing.

What she is doing, as is the FL pastor...expose the extremists. We should be thanking her for her service.

No I think the point is that just because the rapists were black that doesn’t make all black males rapists.

Hold on I have to run and hide my kids from the all these Christians child fuckers.

You don't always deserve the consequences you get, but that doesn't change the truth in the statement.

If I venture into south central LA at midnight and decide to exercise my free speech rights to explain to all present how the white race is the superior race. Well, i don't deserve to be murdered.....but that is the likely consequence of my action.

There are very many situations in which being right can also result in your death.

Who said the rapist was black? I'm here for you if you need to talk through some issues... :P

Yeah, I wouldn't leave my kids alone with pastors, scout leaders, or guys who dress like santa. I call it prudent action. Afterall, as much as people bitch and moan about profiles, they do tend to work.

"central park jogger"
Was an infamous case in NY where a young woman jogger was raped by a gang of young black males.

Total non-sequitur. I realize you're sensitive to people attributing the actions/threats of extremists to all of Islam, but that's not what's happening here.

One problem with the central park jogger analogy is the implication that she deserved the consequences of her actions. As though things as awful as rape or dealth threats become okay just because they're not unexpected. I don't think anyone's arguing that.

Another problem is that there's no "central park" to avoid when it comes to offending muslim radicals. The information age has made the outrage two-step very efficient. (Step 1: internet quickly gets any and all potentially offensive material into the hands of the irritable. Step 2: the media quickly spreads the words and actions of outrage over the material across the globe.) Regardless of how large or small the group of people making death threats is, they are effectively omnipresent.

Great. So if you offend someone and they put out a hit on you, look for sympathy between shit and syphilis in the dictionary.

Sounds fair.

I'm left with the feeling that if a Muslim was burning a bible, he would defend the Muslim's right to free speech. And obviously if we make fun of Muhammad, it's our fault if something happens.

I'm here to say, that the Muslim extremist is wrong. Respect is a 2 way street.

By my 50+ years' life experience, I find that 8 out of 10 people who say that in this context really mean, "Disrespect is a 2-way street."

Tit for tat is a childish game to play. A person can lead, follow, or get out of the way. I prefer to lead. You do what you want.

First of all, I am totally on Molly Norris' side. TOTALLY. The danger she is in is real, just like Theo van Gogh, who was murdered in The Netherlands. It pisses me off to have to say that she needs to change her name and hide in her own country. In OUR country. But she does...

BUT I am not going to go on the warpath with all AMERICAN Muslims over this, because I know they're not all behind this. Not anymore than all Baptists are behind bombing Planned Parenthood Clinics, or sniping at doctors through their kitchen windows in the dead of night, or walking up to doctors and shooting them in the middle of Sunday morning services. All of which have happened in America in the last ten years.

While I have been guilty of some really hateful anti-Muslim statements in the last few years, I have also privately thought that the murder of doctors should be responded to with the killing of preachers in the pulpit on Sunday mornings. Or that the assholes who picket Planned Parenthood should be whipped across their faces with coat hangers.

But this kind of hatred is just the root of the problem and I renounce it. Even if other people can't. Even if they want to continue the cycle, I won't. We have ways to protect Molly Norris. We have ways to prosecute terrorists. Timothy McVeigh, the white American veteran terrorist who blew up the Federal office buildings in OK City is DEAD. He had a FAIR trial, with a GOOD lawyer, was found guilty, and got the needle for it. Went to his death without a final statement, probably for the better - he didn't have a good word to say, so FUCK him. Our system DOES work. We don't need to persecute our fellow AMERICANS who choose to follow a different religion. If they break the law, we're more than capable of getting them for that.

Wake up people ! You're bing MANIPULATED by the people who brought on the economic collapse. They have NOTHING to offer you, but fear itself !

Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
