In Search Of 72 Virgins

Recommended Posts

Ya know, for a guy that is writing a book on schmoozing with terrorist, he sure seems dumber than a box of rocks.

Asking the terrorist about the 72 virgins and where they are in the Quran is stupid because it's not in there. Couldn't he at least have done the smallest amount of reseach first? Or did he and was just trying to piss off the guys with the guns? What did he think he was going to accomplish in attempting to do that? That's just asinine.

The 72 virgins comes from a real world "pleasure garden" a Muslim leader had constructed in the 11th century. He would get his people high on hash, get them sexed up with women and tell them that even if they died in combat they'd be returned to the pleasure garden. When people are high, apparently they're a bit more susceptible to suggestion. Anyway, they'd carry out murders for this guy without any real fear of dying because, ya know . . . women and hash make for a great after life.

This, by the way, is where we get the modern word assassin.

It is a put on. What they actually receive is 72 Virginians including, among others, Carter Braxton, Benjamin Harrison, Thomas Jefferson, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Richard Henry Lee, Thomas Nelson, Jr., and George Wythe. These guys kick their ass and send them to hell.
Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.

The real problem its a group of people doing ALL of their thinking with their far too little heads. If it was such a great deal... how come all the mullahs and imams and leaders like Ahmedinawhackjob are not the ones out martyring themselves to be the first in line.

Right. Because my second paragraph doesn't address that.:S

Look, this guy ain't no Borat. He may be playing a lot of games with the terrorists, but satire doesn't appear to be one of them. He appears to just be a dick.

It appears he does know his stuff and is aware the belief in question is most likely not true (understatement intended). In other words, he is not asking them because he doesn't know and needs to find out. He is asking them in order to confront their bizarre belief.

Whether it is 72 virgins, or 72 Virginians; and regardless of the source (be it Quran or some 11th century Club Med for terrorists); what he is doing is poking at their very asinine belief. Maybe he is attempting to get them to take a critical look at their beliefs. Maybe he is trying to just make their beliefs appear completely uncredible to some younger generation that is at risk for getting indoctrinated with said asinine beliefs.

Why do you think he is dumber than a box of rocks? Because they might get really pissed and kill him? Do you think every soldier that goes over there and is at risk of getting killed by pissed off terrorists is also dumber than a box of rocks?

>Why do you think he is dumber than a box of rocks?

If someone claimed that all Christians believed that God commands them to kill all gays, they'd be wrong as well. In both cases it would either be ignorance of the religion (which equals dumb) or a clever attempt to manipulate people's emotions.

So dumb is equivalent to mis-educated?

In that case all Democrats ARE dumb. Thanks for the clarification.

When did you first know that someone being taught something that simply wasn't true was making that person dumb?

Sometimes, yes, one causes the other.

Dems rule, Repubs drool. Gotcha.

I guess the first time I heard someone claim that dinosaurs lived 6000 years ago.

There are plenty of reasons for stupidity - lack of education, poor education, lack of intelligence, lack of effort, intentional misunderstanding. It is, unfortunately, far more common than its converse.

Because I don't believe the terrorist have ever claimed the "72 virgins" as aspect of terrorism is in the Quran. By him confronting the terrorist with the question, he's not actually proving any point other than how little he (and by extention his audience) knows about the subject.

It would be roughly analogous to confronting a Christian about the magical healing powers of the Holy Grail.

Wow, and 10 years of war, and over 30 with fundamentalist muslim terrorism have taught you nothing, I see....

Please show me where terrorist leader have claimed that the Quran says terrorists will receive 72 virgins by becoming martyrs.

I'm not saying the terrorist don't believe the virgins await them in heaven, but since most of them probably have commited the Quran to memory as part of their purification to become martyrs, I highly doubt they don't know the words in the Quran make no such promise.

So please, SHOW ME where terrorist make the claim.

you want the whole monty ?

The whole Monty, dear Skip, is complete thoughts (preferably one's own) and cogent arguments (preferably one's own), expressed in complete and coherent (tall order, eh?) sentences, ordered together to compose complete paragraphs, more often than not beginning with capital letters, and with punctuation marks in their proper place, not a half a block down the road.

Now when you get around to something that even approaches that, people might start taking you seriously. Otherwise, you're doing little more than what a dog does when he barks at passing cars: a bit of noise, but virtually no meaning, and about as much sense.

Considering what they said in response, my guess is something was lost in translation and they were confused by the question. What they might have understood the question as was something like "tell us what justifies your martyrdom."

I don't know if you've ever had do deal with translation issues, but any time a person tries to work idiom into a conversation, it generally doesn't go well.
