Amazon 7 #1 November 5, 2010 Patty Murry wins her reelection to the Senate. Rick Larson my congressman is ahead by a couple thousand votes of his Tea Party candidate opposition Koster. It was an exceedingly rancorous campaign where things went negative early and VAST amounts of out of state and anonymous funding was putting out negative tea party dregs several times an hour attacking people who have actually served their communities and their constituents with outright lies. The turn out was over 70% the highest since 1970 thanks to so many people sick to death of all the crap. The tea party dregs were energized but people who do not follow their vile tactics poured out to defeat them and their candidates even though an off year election does not usually turn out that way as evidenced by other parts of this country where sane people did not turn out in enough numbers to stop the insanity. Personally I think you are going to see a FAR larger turnout to rid us of all these new people who were just elected in other partd of America when the next two years show exactly what all the Tea Party Dregs are capable of doing to this country. That's one possibility for sure. The other is the trend continues and the pendelum swings further to the right. wmw999 2,452 #8 November 5, 2010 From Federalbudget.com (note: not a liberal site). It's going up, and faster than most of us would like. Look at the three longest bars: Treasury (mostly debt service) Defense Health & Human Services Nothing else comes close. You'd have to add the next three categories togther to equal the smallest of these three. So yeah, we can cut, but the low-hanging fruit is the big guys. Treasury -- again, most of that is debt service. Which we did in the first place, but if we stop paying interest on T-bills, well, we'll really tank the economy. At least in my opinion. Defense -- How much should defense be cut? Where? HHS -- here's where most people want to eliminate much of it. From the HHS Budget Office: 52% of HHS is Medicare, and 33% is Medicaid. Medicare goes to seniors (13% of it is that new drug benefit). How much are you willing to cut Medicare? How to effect those cuts? Why attack the biggest budget items? Well, generally a 1% decrease in something big makes a bigger difference than a 1% decrease in something small. Or something like that. There's a really great article in last month's Texas Monthly trying to go through just the Texas budget and make enough actual cuts to balance it without smoke and mirrors. It sucks. I'm not trying to say we shouldn't try, but I am trying to say that it's probably not as easy as we think it is. For the sake of the eldersWendy P. wmw999 2,452 #10 November 5, 2010 No, I don't really think so. The problem is that demographics (i.e. the fact that we're getting older and fatter) are really catching up with us. Old, fat people cost more and produce less. The health care bill was an attempt to have the health care portion not grow as quickly, by addressing issues early instead of late. That whole a stitch-in-time-saves-nine thing. We could spend less, and we'll end up doing that somehow. But it won't be pretty. And we've used up a couple of stock market bubbles. Look at the chart of the DJIA -- it rockets up with the increase in communications brought about by computers. Are we really that much more productive than 30 years ago? I doubt it. Nobody wants to kill off granny. Even if she's illegal Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it.
