Ruh-roh - Bush lauds "Obama stimulus"

Recommended Posts

Lots of conservatives (including many here) have pinned a lot of their credibility on the idea that TARP is a "failed stimulus program", an irresponsible waste of money.

================
JohnRich:
Obama's failed stimulus program cost more than the Iraq war

Expect to hear a lot about how much the Iraq war cost in the days ahead from Democrats worried about voter wrath against their unprecedented spending excesses. The meme is simple: The economy is in a shambles because of Bush's economic policies and his war in Iraq... The key point in the mantra is an alleged $3 trillion cost for the war. Well, it was expensive to be sure, in both blood and treasure, but, as Hoven notes, the CBO puts the total cost at $709 billion...

Obama's stimulus, passed in his first month in office, will cost more than the entire Iraq War -- more than $100 billion (15%) more...
==================
Marks2065:
the stimulus was just 800 billion in welfare and pay offs to Obama supporters
==================
RushMC:
What idiot is in charge of giving these people stimulus money and tax breaks ? Obama
==================
RushMC:
The stimulas and TARP were sluch funds to cover earmarks not voted on and secure votes and allies

It goes for both parties IMO

But in the end, Obama can claim nothing when it comes to the economy.
==================

This looks like trouble for them:

"I can understand the angst," said Bush. "But in my case, I wasn't worried about angst, or personal angst, or contradiction. I was worried about the economy going down. And I believe TARP saved the economy."

Will conservatives do a 180 and start supporting TARP now that the economy is recovering? Or will they add George Bush to the growing list of evil lying Obama-worshippers? The latter might cause a problem come next election - "I opposed the program that saved the economy, according to GWB."

Tarp will be paid back and the stimulous won't. Didn't like either one but at least bush looked out for our future, Obama spent it. Tarp was a government loan, stimulous and porkulous were gifts.

I think most of the fiscal conservative (non-partisan types) here opposed Bush's irresponsible reckless spending just as vigorously they oppose Obama's irresponsible reckless spending. Both pres's had congress aligned for some time and both abused that opportunity to rape everyone's wallets.

Tarp will be paid back

The original aim of TARP funds was to buy the toxic asset that came from the bundling of various investments (mostly mortgages) into secondary and tertiary vehicles that became impossible to track. Had banks and government been able to identify those, the money spent to acquire those vehicles would have been gone for ever.

Because it was impossible to use these funds that way, a good portion of the TAPR funds were used to prop up the banking and auto industry by direct investment.

TARP never was meant to be a loan. It was used as one. You can thank the guy who inherited the mess for doing so.

last I heard half the tarp was used before Obama came in and it was a loan considering they were going to pay it back with interest.

Some will, some won't. Of course, it's getting increasingly intereesting how Obama supporters are comparing the President to Nixon and now Dubya! Really, if Dubya thought it was a good thing it was seemingly by definition a bad idea.

Obama's presidency has seemingly been marked by expensive policy initiatives, with a Congress more than willing to give him whatever he wants. The difference being more more more.

And either way, both took a policy of subsidizing failed policies - a popular political thing to do.
