Twenty-Five Arrested, Thousands Converge on Koch Brothers Billionaire's Caucus in the California Desert

Recommended Posts

nice to see the billionaires under pressure from 'we the people'...

Quote

Van Jones, the former green jobs deputy in the Obama Administration and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, described the anti-Koch rally as “the beginning of our fight back.” The leadership of Common Cause, generally a far more congenial organization, was a bit unusual, part of a new aggressiveness and penchant for direct action from the group. “I think you’re going to see a new Common Cause.”

The Koch Brothers, billionaires who have generously funded conservative and libertarian causes for over a generation – including the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, and tea party groups like Americans for Prosperity – put together an annual meeting, typically held in the California desert, with fellow corporate CEOs and conservative operatives, to plan the year ahead. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain were reputed to attend the gathering at the sprawling Rancho Las Palmas resort. The Kochs bought out the entire resort for Saturday and Sunday. Some activists who stayed at the resort Friday night and booked dinners at their restaurants on Saturday had their reservations canceled by the resort, and were given $150 each for their trouble.

Interesting. What I noticed was the liberal organization promising new agressiveness while the conservative/libertarian side was politely defusing the situation and paying people for their trouble.

Seems to me these people want to protest this group similar to how the right wing religion guys want to protest funerals.

Let other people gather to support their cause. Don't go to another man's house and stir up trouble.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

If the feds aren't trying to get your 401K the billionaires are.

the difference here is that the left wants to take your money and disperse it their way, the billionaires want you to make a billion and join them and put the money were YOU want.

[Reply]The protesters generally decried the Koch Brothers’ influence over American democracy, in particular their use of the Citizens United ruling to spend corporate money in elections

How interesting that the First Amendment is used to protest protections afforded under the First Amendment. It is true that American Democracy was founded on the ideal that some people aren't entitled to a voice in the system. I guess one could ask, "Which side actually wants to shut people up?" Sure, the right wing has a nasty habit of making ballots that a large percentage of left wing voters can't figure out. But the left responds with efforts to ensure that the right wing won't be heard.

Democracy at it's finest means squelching voices. (Funny how unions had protestors there. My guess is that the left wants an exception carved out for unions in attempting to do something about Citizens United).

That's odd, I didn't realize that desecrating the American flag and saying things like soldiers are "burning in hell" and "thank God for dead soldiers" were atributes of the right wing.

If the ideology of the WBC is to have any political consideration they sould be viewed as broken wing abbhorocrats.

>ya...that's not the right wing.

OK. So they're conservative religious Christian anti-gay political activists who have the same basic platform as most other right wingers - but they're so extreme they are embarrassing, so they're not really right wing.

Fair enough. Of course, by the same token, the left can exclude all _their_ really embarrassing extremists as well.

Are these Koch brothers the owners of Koch Foods? Dumb question I know, but there are a bunch of chicken coops around here contracted to Koch Foods...

:D

Sure but you forgot that they hate America, desecrate the american flag and boast over dead American soldiers - practically the same basic platform as Islamic Terrorists but they're not Islamic Terrorists...are they?

Haven't seen any ballot issues since Gore vs Bush.
That problem was in a democrat county with a democrat supervisor of elections and she was the one that designed the famous butterfly ballot.

I'm sure the chad issue had been around a long time but became a big issue because of the small led Bush had.

The left wants to take your money and fund their pet projects with it; the right wants to take your money and fund their pet wars with it. Billionaires got to _be_ billionaires by getting other people to give them billions. Given the limited supply of money out there, they have a vested interest in not seeing a whole lot more billionaires appear in their fields.

(You really think Bill Gates is going to be working to make sure a Linux company makes billions?)

Greenies, can we just create another sticky thread and link it to alternet.com? It would save dreamdancer a lot of time and maybe give him an excuse to go think for himself for a while.

It would also save some space with MUCH shorter thread titles.

Sure thing, Kev. I'll type slow so that you'll at least have a chance of keeping up.

This is known as an analogy. It shows how one pair of things are related to each other like another pair of things. It can help a reader understand something as long as they're not a complete fucking idiot and can make the connection.

In this analogy, the wealth that people have built is represented by the house.

The connection I want you to make (I know it's hard, but you can at least try;)) is this: If a person builds wealth, you should not try to destroy it. You see, Kev, if you don't destroy another persons wealth, you could build wealth for yourself and expect it to be safe from others destroying it.

I've kept this in very simple terms for you. I know it probably makes your brain hurt, but I hope you at least understand a little more now.
