Spotlight focuses on activism of Koch brothers

By Richard McGregor in Washington

Amid a bitter stand-off with political opponents and his legislature surrounded by tens of thousands protesters, Wisconsin’s governor still found time to talk to one businessman who called offering support.

A prankster identifying himself as David Koch, the billionaire industrialist, called the office of Scott Walker and was put straight through to the Republican governor for a convivial 20-minute chat about the plan to dismantle the power of local unions.

For Democrats and their union backers, the call, broadcast last week, is more evidence of what they regard as the disturbing penetration of the political system by Mr Koch and his brother Charles.

The brothers head Koch Industries, one of the largest private companies in the US.

Based in Kansas, the company is a big factor in energy, petro-chemicals, paper and pulp, fertiliser and pipelines and employs 50,000 people in the US.

But it is the brothers’ extra-curricular activities that are catching most attention.

Long supporters of free market causes, the brothers have stepped up their political activism over concern at the growth of government and thethe push to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, something that would directly hurt their businesses.

A report by Greenpeace, the environment group, says the Kochs spent $24.9m between 2005 and 2008 to fund the “climate denial machine”. The brothers have also donated money to many Republican causes, including candidates such as Mr Walker and from the Tea Party.

In the process, the brothers have become symbols on the left of the sustained campaign against the Obama administration over the size of government and the power of the Environment Protection Agency.

The 2010 Supreme Court decision, known as Citizens United, which lifted restrictions on corporate funding of independent political broadcasts, has added to the power of businesses such as the Kochs’, their critics say. “The Koch brothers have long been a driving force in loosening restrictions on political donations,” said Robert Reich, a labour secretary in the Clinton administration.

The brothers have always openly supported an agenda of “economic freedom” and say they will keep supporting politicians such as Mr Walker, despite being “vilified” for their efforts.

A spokeswoman for Koch Industries said the brothers’ commitment to “liberty and free-market principles” transcended politics, and reflected “firm beliefs that economic freedom benefits all members of society, including all workers”.

“Those who oppose economic freedom and liberty have engaged in a concerted campaign to maliciously spread misinformation about the Kochs and Koch Industries in order to further their political objectives,” she said, adding they welcomed debate about the government’s role in preventing economic disaster.

In January, Common Cause, an advocacy group, called for an investigation into the attendance of two Supreme Court justices, Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, at meetings sponsored by the Kochs.

Mr Reich said such meetings, ahead of the Citizens United decision, gave rise to criticism.

I read the article from top to bottom. Didn't find any reason to think badly of them. They promote free enterprise and smaller government. I can't afford to pal around with them, but it sounds like I would like to.

The genesis of the article was that someone (I presume someone who disagrees with the brothers) called the Governor's office and lied about being one of the brothers in order to talk to him. Illegal and unethical (though rather funny). How this casts aspersions on the brothers escapes me.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
