The practice of getting an SSN at birth is a very recent one, driven by the IRS requirement to have one for any dependent you claim, one that didn't exist in the 60s, or 70s, or 80s either I believe. wmw999 2,439 #99 April 21, 2011 If you google it, you'll see that SSNs are generally assigned with the first 5 numbers indicating the state and year when issued, and the last 4 are basically sequential. So the first 5 digits of his SSN correspond to having been issued in 1977 in Connecticut; Obama had his first job (at a Baskin-Robbins) a year or two before that, and he had never lived in Connecticut. They got his SSN off his Selective Service application. That's the crux of the argument. I know that in 1971 I applied for my SSN and it shows that I applied from Maryland, where I have never lived. My physical address at the time was Brazil, so they might have used the fact that I had an APO zip code, but those say APO New York. Personally, I think it's a bunch of crap. The thought that there could be that much skullduggery over who was (at the time) a pretty normal 16-year-old boy is astounding.
