QuoteI wish nerdgirl still posted here. She would have some terrific thoughts and insight on this.
EXACTLY what I was thinking....

QuoteQuoteDidn't you see the press conference? "I", "me", "my"
Obama: built the team, trained them, flew the planes, packed the rigs, assembled and cleaned the rifles, led the attack, gave the order to wait, gave the order to shoot, sewed the uniforms, aimed the gun,,, THEN gave permission to pull the trigger (based on a trigger pulling SOP that he wrote). Then he gently pulled all the information from Osama's brain in a mind meld, and lovingly washed and cleaned the body and buried him respectfully.
for the country of course
seriously, he didn't screw this one up, that's a win - he learned from the pirate hostage scenario - the ability to learn is a good thing
Frankly, I think Obama handled this *very* well.
I do too. I was just gigging on the delivery of his press conference, not the operation itself. But I'd sooner give credit to the teams on the ground, and his advisors on the mission as the real decision makers. He should be reflecting their accomplishment rather than taking it for himself.

I served many years on an Army Special Forces Operational Detachment, was in Afghanistan in 2002.

QuoteWould you be in favor of using deadly force at your disposal if someone broke into your house and threatened you or your family's life...or even killed one of them? The tyrant we just elliminated had people steal our planes, fly them in the airspace of our home country, and into our buildings, killing thousands of our family members...and planned to do more. Are you saying not to fight back?
If I had to use deadly force, I would not be cheerful/celebrating after doing so...
If you think one atrocious act deserves another, then I don't think you understand the true meaning of peace and how to achieve it. (I don't mean "you" specifically.)

QuoteAs long as you assume that all other humans see things the way you do, and think the way you do, about superficial things like who thinks who is a terrorist, you'll be making invalid assumptions.
And as long as you just assume that being born in a country makes it impossible to think clearly and objectively, you'll be making invalid assumptions.
QuoteAnd if their life sucks, then being told that the next one is better if they do the right things will motivate them.
Is that "American" thinking or are you the only one able to shuck the geographical thinking?

I was disturbed by dancing and drunken celebration also
the best way to acknowledge this was quiet approval of a distasteful job that HAD to be done - and that our people had the nerve and ability to do that job

QuoteIt's a topic I find difficult to come to terms with - it's just not cut and dry for me. It's with a heavy heart that I heard the news today. I feel for those who lost people (on both sides)... I dread what the response will be, and how the US will be viewed following this event... I cringe at the thought that oppression and terrorism could grow further from this. For me, it's a sad day.
You could not be more wrong.
This is a great day for mankind. The death of OBL is a victory for humanity against those deranged psychopaths who would lead civilization away from logic and reason, and take it back down into the ugly darkness that it only so recently crawled up out of.
It's also a victory for islam. With fewer people like him in the gene pool, perhaps real reform can take place.
His sick and twisted mind was a disease, and he's met the cure in the form of US Navy Seals.
I'll bet he didn't get his 72 virgins, either.
There is no need to be sad, Nataly. Instead, be glad, as one would feel glad that a rabid dog has been put down. It really is for the best.
OBL is dead, but the war goes on.

ps - For my part, I'm only sorry that I wasn't on that aircraft carrier so that I could piss on his dead face.

QuoteI put that in quotes for a reason, and I did NOT say they were innocent.
They were not exactly 'civilians' either. They were support staff.

Dude...no problem. I loved being on the team. I'd still be there if I was single with no really small children. I'd do it all again. I also didn't post that to boast. I do not like coming across that way. I am proud of my service but not in that way. I only did it because it felt a little strange (I'm sure it was my pride) being "called out" on combat experience by a girl. Guess I'm just from another generation. NO OFFENCE INTENDED for those women out there who have served. I deeply respect your service. I mean that. Just struck me as odd. I respect anyone...and I mean anyone who is willing to pick up a rifle and stand with me. I don't care who you are.

And I respectfully submit that you do not understand that force and the threat of force is what keeps the peace in this world. I don’t like that fact, but I understand it and it will not change in our life times
Freedom is not free. A tragic fact we all have to deal with in out own ways"America will never be destroyed from the outside,

QuoteQuoteI put that in quotes for a reason, and I did NOT say they were innocent.
They were not exactly 'civilians' either. They were support staff.
OBL was not the leader of a recognized state.
AQ is not the army of a recognized state.
Therefore they are civilian criminals.
Can we please stop trying to elevate criminals to the level of a uniformed army?
QuoteQuoteI agree.QuoteBTW, I think it's pretty sick that people would go out in the middle of the night, head to the White House or Times Square and rejoice. Reminds me of the people in the ME who were rejoicing when the WTC was hit
Wendy P.
Uh, the obvious difference is that one group celebrated the killing of civilians, and the other group celebrated the death of the person responsible for these 3000 civilian deaths.
If they were celebrating the death of our previous president because they believe he caused them nothing but anguish, I can't fault them for it. But it's just not the same cheering for killing people who just wanted to fly from Boston to San Francisco.
If you people can't see the difference, then perhaps you need to own up to some serious bias problems (this is directed in particular at some English posters, not Wendy).
Running out of your house in the middle of the night to cheer anyones death is sick. What, do you think this is some kind of football game? If you can't see that then I feel sorry for, uh, some English posters.
No, but on another forum it was pointed out that 1 May 1945 was the day Germany announced Hitler's death.
